I have an 8 month old Cocker Spaniel. She was a rescue pup and had a foster family until we adopted her at 5 months. She was potty trained and did wonderful up until about 2 wks ago. Now she refuses to potty outside. We have tried leashing her, walking her, even leaving the backdoor wide open for her. She will hold it until she's about to pop. This morning, it was pee on the stairs after she had been out at 5:30 (at which time she didn't go of course). We're at the end of our ropes and don't know what else to do. We have been re-reading our training books to no avail....HELP......

Did something happen outside? Was she scared in the middle or startled? Does she appear healthy in every other way? Is she uncomfortable with you watching her? As funny as it was to me, my rotti x was scared by a hot air ballon, it took two weeks before she was comfortable outside again. (PS she still hates & fears them)
Try blocking off an area of the yard and leave her in there for 1-2 hours at time. Remember to praise lots & lots the whole time. In the house - crate her again so you can control accidents.

I agree with doglover. I also believe something might have hapenned outside that scared her. My dog two weeks ago was outside doing her thing at night and lightning started, and she was so scared she ran inside the house and has not wanted to go outside at night ever since. If I were you I would take some toys and treats, make sure your pup sees all these in your hands, and take him outside, and play with him for as long as you can, on your day off or something, he might just end up doing it outside, at which time you will praise him like never before! You can also collect something with his scent, like the paper towel you used to clean his mess at home and put it somewhere outside while you are there playing with him, he might smell it and it might help him to just do it.

Have you guys thought about training your dog indoors with the dog potty? It's just like training your dog to use the newspapers or wee weepads. However I found that this was a cleaner solution. It takes a couple of days to 2 weeks depending on how smart your dog is. It is very conveinient to have around the home also, just in case for those pee-mergencies. check it out at www.powda.us

Actually, the problem seemed to start with the grass being wet/damp after a rain and she would go potty on the patio or walkway, but then it just got worse and she wouldn't even do that. We started walking her and I think she decided she would rather go for a long stroll than potty in the yard. We started over with training and started taking her to potty in the yard in one are (on the leash) and we didn't let her off the leash until she had finally gone potty outside. So far we have only had 2 accidents. The only problem is that we can't get her to alert us to when she needs to go out (barking, banging at door, etc). When we first got her they had trained her with a bell at the door, but then she started using that just to go out, nothing to do with going potty. She's a slick little thing!
