Dear All,
I have a 10 weeks old Ridgeback(I had her when she was 9 weeks old) which I keep in the crate confined to the laundry room when I am at home and free to roam around when in the laundry when I am not at home. I work during the day and I am unable to find anybody to go to my place to take her out during the day so I am putting newspaper down when I am not at home and when I am at home I take her out every 30 mins or so. She has been relieving herself outside without much difficulty even though sometimes she is playful and she wes 2-3 imes while I take her out for about 5-10 mins.
I have 2 major questions that I would like to seek your advices..
1. Lately I been having this problem, while I have newspaper down, she poos outside the newspaper just next to her crate even though she wees on them, I have put newspapers down where she seems to choose to poo everytime but she seems to move the newspaper away to poo on the tiles, what shall I do? why is she pooing on the tiles instead of on the newspaper where she has no problem to wee...
2. I am crating her when I am at home and able to take her out every 30 mins but when I am unable to take her out even though when I am at home, I let her roam around in the laundry with newspaper on the floor, my question is as follows:
a) Am I encouraging her to relieve herself on the newspaper by letting her out of her crate(I leave the crate door open) and roam around in the laundry?
b) Say I did not let her roam around, would she has held a little bit longer instead of just coming out of her crate(since the door is left open) and relieving herself on the newspaper. What I am unsure is whether say there was no newspaper on the floor and she was locked in her crate, would she have given me some kind of signal(e.g cry, yell) to tell me she wants to go out since I understand that dog would not want to relieve themselves in their crate (she did it once though, that's why I am scared of locking hewr in her crate fearful that she might relieve herself in the crate and this means more cleaning for me to do)
In a nutshell, in order to properly train her, when I am at home and unable to take her out as often as I usually do (say every 30 mins), should leave the newspaper down and let her crate door open? or I should not leave the newspaper down, like this she might be trained to hold a little bit longer..
Your advice is very much appreciated..
Thank you
Regards,
Rob

Rob, there have been several posts dealing with the potty training issue. What you really need is a little patience. Give it a month - using the techiques already suggested in this forum. If no success after a month, you may need help.

Rob, you can house train your puppy with the Dog Potty which is designed for owners that are busy and it is a cleaner method than newspapers. Check it out at www.powda.us . However, a puppy requires lots of time to train, especially when they're young. Good Luck!

First...you are not supposed to put newspapers down because they still see it as going in the house. You should probably hire a pet-sitter or consider having a doggie door installed in the back door or something and keep her in the room with the doggie door. Good Luck

A rule of thumb is a dog can hold it, it's age months plus one, that is how many hours you have. never scold for going in the house. only when you catch interuppt her her with a nah! WALK her to the door. so she's know's to where to walk to. let her out. when she goes ouside in the middle of the of her buisness say a phrase like, get going. then after awhile you'll be able to say it and she will go. keep patient it will come.
