Last week, I had adopted a 6mth old Cocker Spaniel from the SPCA. Darling dog, who knows the basic commands...is well behaved and gets along great with my 6 year old Lab. The problem that I am having is the house training bit. His previous owners from my understanding did not crate train him. I on the other hand am. He barks continuously when I am in the same room as him, but that is slowly disapating while he gets use to his new den. At this moment in time he is in his crate...and has been for pretty near the whole day. Why you are asking yourself...well, my husband took him out this morning to which he went pee. I woke up shortly after..was having my coffee and he started to poop on the carpet right there in front of us. I moved his butt to the side and quickly rushed him to the dog run. He has Yet to go poop. this was 12 hours ago. I know he has to go, but he is refusing to go in the dog run. He has before when he just could not keep it in...he goes pee in there fine, but pooping on the other hand seems to be a difficult task. I am taking him out every half hour. He has poop of his own in there that he can sniff to get some type of urge...but no go so far. Is there something out there that will help a dog do its business? I can not let him out of his crate until he goes poop in the dog run. What else can I do, cause I am beginning to feel really bad, but on the other hand I do not wish to clean up poop after the fact.
Thanks for any help provided.

If he still had to poop, he would have done it by now regardless of where he is, cause when you gotta go, you gotta go. Try massageing his belly, is it really tight, can you feel any lumps, if you can, that is poo. After a good rub down, take him outside, not in the run, or anywhere else he has been, maybe somewhere where your lab goes, he will soon want to place some of his smell there. House training takes time and patience, after all your dog won't know what you really want of him till he is shown, cause he is older this could take a couple of months, don't expect too much in a few days.

If you can, leave some of your labs poo in there, put your new arrival in there too, and leave him there for a while. Give his food first, then he will surely have to go about 1/2 and hour later.

I completely understand your frustration. I had two cocker spaniels from the same litter and they were the only dogs I ever had trouble with housetraining. They were cute to look at but dumb like stick and destructive to boot.
They would wait and them both sneak off to my daughters room and poop in her closet.
You really can't afford to have him start anywhere in your house or he'll never stop. Can you lock him in the dog run? Maybe more his crate in there?

Good news...beau..my cocker spaniel is now doing his deed in the dog run. However, he will only go in there if led. He will go pee on command...which is good. But he is going pee outside of the run as well. It's almost like he is saying...here is alittle bit in here to keep you happy..now I will do the rest of it out there to keep me happy..LOL Guess that will come all in due time. Since he had not gone to the bathroom last night, and will bark up a storm in his crate if we are sitting in the same room as him. I tied him up to my couch, and placed a bath matt on the floor under him, gave him a kong ball..and he seemed content. I hope this is the right thing to do. Never had to worry about it will my Lab, he was a quick learner.
