Hello I'm new. My profile say's I don't own any pets and it's true but my dad does and sometimes I take responsibility of the dog when needed(so I guess that makes me a vicarious owner). The dog is a thirteen week papillon who we got from a breeder who from what I was told had other puppies which may have been more aggresive.(forgive me but some of this info. is second hand).

Any way the puppy wont eat unless you hand feed him, he will eat out of the dish every once in a while but for the most part he freaks out backs up and/or whines and wimpers when you put a dish in front of him.

His blood sugar is low and we got this protien stuff we haft to put on his teath to help raise it. The vet is also conserned that he might have worms because of the low blood sugar. Although I just think he needs to eat more either way we will be using the worm stuff and the protien just in case.

Any tips on how to get him to eat on his own? Please help.

I wouldn't worry about it for now. Your main concern should be to bring his weight up and stabilize him. Then you can add a treat to the bottom of his dish or use a plate vs bowl.

If he was around other, more aggressive dogs, he may not be used to eating from the bowl, perhaps he was "not allowed" by the other pups. I agree with doglover in that your main concern right now should be getting him to eat, even if that means feeding him by hand.
Are you (or your dad) planning on crate training the little guy? I would strongly recommend it. Dogs consider their crate their "den" and, as long as it is not used for punishment, they will most likely LOVE IT!!! Many people feed their dogs in the crate. This may create an even bigger sense of "safety" for your pup, knowing that it is his food, in his crate, and that no other dog is going to take it away.

Good luck!!

Try leaving him in a room with his food alone door closed or crate for half hour. At thirteen weeks if you hand feed you may not be able to get him to eat out of a bowl at all as this is what he is accustomed to.
My puppy was a finicky eater and had worms I hand fed him and had a VERY hard time getting him to eat out of a bowl if he is left with his food by himself he will eat. You may also add a scrambled egg to make it more appetizing. Something he doesnt get if hand fed should convince him the bowl is better.

Well I just saw him eat out of the platter we gave him, and we did put a small container(I think it was used as a change holder) in his kenel but I'm not sure if he ate out of that. My dad's fiance is trying to hand feed him right now but he already ate enough.

As far as the weight gain goes, if he is still not eating enough in an over all day we have that protien gel. I think he should just haft to learn to eat out of the container now that we found one he likes and use the gel to help suplement him if he still isn't eating enough.

Any way thanks for the help. I'd like to hear more Ideas.

For now I would just worry about putting the much needed weight and protein in his system, after you correct that problem, you can simply put his food in a plate, and some treats on the way to it, call him to his plate, and if he does not eat from the plate, remove the plate and do it again at his next meal time. When a dog is hungry a dog will eat!! This sounds harsh, I know, but my dog woulnd't eat period, for days, and I didn't know what to do anymore, and everyone told me to do that, and it worked. Also try putting his favorite treat at the bottom of the plate. Also, important, when he does eat from his plate, praise him happily!!! And start giving him treats from his plate rather than from your hand. I hope this helps. good luck with your pup!!

Hi again, I just had to add another thing that worked with my dog when she wasn't eating. I know your problem is that your dog won't eat from the bowl. Try rubbing some cheese on the bowl, so it smells like it, the smell of it has to attract your dog. All dogs love cheese!!

Was he tested for parasites? Your vet should do all of the lab test before you treat him.
