Ariel just finished her first class (mine too!).
Let me ask everyone's opinion on the word SIT. For me, it's always been for the dog to be looking at me and staying until I release.

I have already taught Ariel to SIT. She does it well - whether looking at me or by my side. She will even SIT - Stay for a count of 15.

My question is "Do you think I should use "SIT READY" to indicate I want her at my side vs looking at me?

Ok for me we have three "sits" sit, place, and ready. Place is where they go around me and sit at left side. Sit is where they sit anywhere they hear the command and "ready" is where they come, sit, and look at me. Congrats on your first class. There always tons of fun!

When I'm training dogs I have three different sits. They are as follows: sit is where they turn to look at me & sit down right where they are; attention which is where the dog comes & sits at my right side & waits for the next command; wait which is where the dog will sit down & wait until I tell him/her they can leave. The hardest one to teach a dog is attention. You have to have a LOT of patients. So if you don't have a whole lot of patients don't try to teach your dog attention, but if you want to give it a try GO FOR IT!!!! [Big Grin] If you want to use "Sit Ready" that's okay too. It's is more about how you feel you want to train your dog. So Good Luck training your puppy (Ariel)! I hope everything works out great & that she is easy to train. I hope that she becomes the best pup in the world for you. [Wink]
