My male Aussie is two years old. He was neutered at 5mo. The question is: why does he still squat to pee? I've never seen him lift his leg. He has been well socialized- dog park almost every day of his life, so he has seen other male dogs lift their legs. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I'm just curious about this behavior.

Why do some men sit to pee? Preference & opportunity.
I have a female (10+years) that lifts her leg especially if she is peeing on hills, trees, etc.
The neutering has reduced his need to mark so that is part of the equation - the rest is his specialness.

One of the big advantages of neutering at 5 months, before sexual maturity is reached.
The hormone testosterone sends the message to the brain, to attract females and mark territory.
As he was neutered he does not receive the message therefore he has not learnt to lift the leg and mark territory.
Humans only have the scrotum cut and tied, but dogs have the testicles removed altogether. Therefore there is no production of seamen at all. If they happened to have reached maturity before this though, the behaviour is learned and they most likely will keep doing it, even though the testicles have been removed.
Not a very technical explanation, but understandable.

Thanks so much for the info. One thing I have noticed, as we walk he does (occasionally) "mark" areas where other dogs have gone.-tho, still in a squat- my silly boy. (the general public thinks he's a girl...all that hair and the squat)

lol, you made me laugh with the girl bit, poor boy, but better to sqwat than lift the leg inside, so many people have that problem on this forum, I often wonder if the breeders ever tell their new pup owners any info at all.
My girl will also mark after female dogs too, but it is not territorial, its just a doggy thing. Like sniffing each others you know what's. Gosh I hate it when they do that, so unlady like!!!

Actually, Lifting the leg is a learned behaviour. Neither of my guys lift their leg..one is neutered the other is soon to be. I was told if I ever got them lifting their leg..to give them **** . Do not care for them to pee on the outside of their run, when the purpose of a run is to avoid killing my grass..LOL

I wondered if it was a learned behavior. That's why I mentioned that my dog had been socialized in dog parks and had seen lots of male dogs lift their legs. I'm very glad he doesn't, however.

Rio's Mom, I don't know why but my female dog used to **** her leg. It's been some time now since she has done it but when she was a puppy she did. It Seemed at that time that she did everything else wrong, why not that? She's a sweetheart at 3 yrs.

I think my female Dax does it so she can deposit pee at a height that easy for other dogs to sniff at. There is no way she could have learned this behavior as she was raised with another female who didn't do this.
The new pup Ariel (5 months) also doesn't lift leg. I believe it's a personality issue made better or worse with learning.
