My dog, Rudolph, is a male parti-mix cocker spaniel. He already knows sit, down, stay, and come, but does anyone know any fun tricks that I could teach him. Like those show-off kind of tricks that amaze people. ![[Smile]](smile.gif) If you know any, please give suggestions. I think it would help him stay "entertained," because he loves to do tricks now ...especially for lots of praise.
(Or even useful tricks)

You know, they actually have classes for fun tricks like these, around here! If you can find one, they're actually cheaper than normal classes, and I think they'd be lots of fun! I'm sending Molly to one once she's done with advanced beginners, intermediate, and agility classes (yup, my pups gonna know more than any dog on the block). I love classes :-D

my wolf dog can play dead, give high fives, wave, crawl, roll over, bow, shake hands, give ten (high fives with both feet) spin round, walk on her hind legs, stand straight up on her back legs, say hello, give hugs, find her lead, turn on the tap in the yard, press switches, put her head on her paws, etc all my dogs can do some of them but Tara was the only one who learnt them all.
We had a border collie trained for TV that pulled on people's trousers (that one was to attck a burglar) growled, raised her lips, raised her back leg in a "marking" position, did the "follow me" thing lassie was so good at, jumped through paper covered hoops, could work the pedestrian crossings by pressing the button, opened doors, pulled people's socks off, got washing out of the machine, undid shoelaces, fetched the phone when it rang, (she was a disabled helper dog on one programme)

Roslynd does all the normal things (shake, etc.) but she can also balance a treat on her nose, then when you tell her, "Okay" she'll flip it up in the air and catch it. She also says "I don't want to" when you make her sit, lay down, sit, lay down over and over, it is too cute.

how would you teach them to crawl, rub eyes, balance a treat and any other fun tricks?
this is my first time having a puppy, so all of this is new to me. luckily we taught our puppy the basics plus paw and fetch

crawl is really easy. You get a toy ir treat they especially like, ask them for a "down" when they are lying down you put the treat/toy in front of them (enclosed within your hand) and move it a couple of inches in front of their nose and say crawl. They will automatically move forwards to get at the treat. you praise them as soon as they move as long as they stay on their belly. If they get up you repeat the down command and start again. Most dogs pick this one up easily.

playing dead is also very easy, you give a down command and get the dog to roll onto their side, then say dead. The minute the dog is perfectly still you praise them and let them up. You can gradually increase the time they spend in the "dead" pose. My younger pointer will even shut her eyes and stop breathing!!

For wave - you start by putting your hand in the position to shake a paw by move your hand. Continue with the command for BYE BYE. They will wave.
The fridge trick starts out with a favorite tug of war toy. Then you attach it to the fridge handle and get them to pull - Praise as soon as the fridge is open.. you get it from there.

my advice - DONT teach your dog to open the fridge or they will realise food is in there and opne it when you arent around, which could result in them eating things that are unsuitable and becoming ill. Or eating your dinner!

Key is to simply remove the tug of war toy when you're not around and never let the dog do the trick unsupervised. Never let him nose around or take anything but the specific item you teach him. IE pop can, beer, etc.
It can be a cool trick but they're right about the dangers too. All tricks can lead to other things so always use common sense and what you know about your dog.

I know a woman who has to bungee cord her fridge closed at all times because her lab will open the door and help himself to a nice meal ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif) LOL!!
Not a trick I would teach my dog, but..... would be cute to see a dog go get me a pepsi

I have two very food oriented dogs... so I would never teach it either but the originator was just looking for tricks. It's one.

Here's a cute one. Point to your cheek and say "give kiss" sometimes they're wet and sloppy other times a dry peck, but it always looks cute and makes you feel loved.
