whats the best way to stop your dog jumping up(he's a 9month old springer)he jumps up at people and on the furniture i think he knows its wromg because if i say down he will get down 2 mins later he's doing it again.i wonder if he justs wants attention but i seem to spend all my time shouting at him and telling him no. ![[Eek!]](eek.gif)
also he wees a little bit on people when he greets them cos he is excited will he grow out of this.
he will be going to a training class soon but i just wondered if anyone had any tips

Once you get him "down" yous could try putting him in a "sit, stay". also, if you are using "down" when you mean "off" and "down" when you mean "lay down" you could be confusing him a little. Try separating the commands, try the sit-stay and see how that works. And don't forget to praise him, also... treats would work well for praising the sit-stay!!
As for the weeing on people, this is not something to punish him for, as he cannot control it...and is probably soemthing he will grow out of.

I find the easiest way to get a dog to stop jumping is to leave a leash on it. If you know friends are stopping over have the leash on him. Step on the leash right underneath the chin then he jumps, the leash will pull tight on the collar and prevent him from jumping. He will not like this feeling. Once again, I will say that consistency is what is necessary in training anything. So that means, whenever he thinks about jumping, i.e getting his food ready, people coming to the door, a knock at the back door, whatever, you have to be ready to correct it. A couple of times will not work. Everytime until you realize he is not making an attempt to jump on anyone. I used to leave a leash on my pups at all times. Then at least I had a 6 foot advantage to correcting a behavior.

He is a springer spaniel, fair sized dog, why don't you lift your leg when he goes to jump, that is bend your knee and lift your leg in the air, he will certainly be suprised and lose his balance. Then give a great squealing yell...NO...

The knee to the chest, as ellierat suggested, is a big help. Just put your leg up and let the dogg run into it, don't try to hurt him or anything. This worked well for Roslynd until she got tall enough to use my knee as a launch pad.... jumps all the way up to my face now!! Poor thing, it's only to me and the hubby, she has bad separation anxiety ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

this is a situation in which i would recommend clicker training. Use the clicker to praise him when he has all four feet on the floor and is behaving and ignore him completely when he tries to jump up. Turn your back to him until he is stood or sat calmly. then praise him. He will soon learn that he gets no attention when he jumps up and will start doing whatever it is that attracts your attention. What you need to do is teach him that the best attention-grabbing behaviour is to sit still right next to you - not jump up and knock you flying.
For the jumping on the furniture i would suggest some sort of remote punishment such as using a water pistol. A few unpleasant experiences "should" put him off, but bear in mind he is a spaniel, they take the longest to learn things like that.

thanks for the advice ive found something that works the girl at the dog groomers recommended it i filled an empty coke bottle with screws and everytime he jumped up on something i threw it so it landed just behind him and he stops straight away now i only have to shake it a little and he knows i tried this a few months ago and it didnt work but it has now. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)
