My wife and I are looking to purchase a Boykin. Does anyone have any information other than that found on the Internet. My wife has fallen for the pictures we've seen, but it would be nice to hear from someone who has actually been with one.

I don't know of any breeders (sorry!), but I just thought I'd key you in to a well kept secret about Boykins... their coat must be hand stripped to look like the pictures I'm sure you and your wife have been looking at. Hand stripping is a tedious task that must be done at least quarterly. Basically, the person doing the stripping takes a mega serrated "stripping knife" and pulls out the wispy undercoat until the desired coat texture (glossy, wavy, and smooth feeling) is obtained.

Finding a groomer that strips can be quite a challenge. I strip, but that's only because some of my mentors have to strip the coats of their show dogs. Having a groomer do it wil be expensive as well - it takes hours, and I charge about $80 to hand strip the Boykins that come into the shop where I work... and that's on the cheap side.

If you don't hand-strip, your Boykin will look fuzzy and wispy, with a dull coat similar to cotton candy.
