I live in the Mojave Desert; Las Vegas, NV. The average temp. at the moment is 118. I have two dogs; an adult Dalmation and a mix-breed puppy (cocker spaniel and rottwieller [Eek!] ). The dogs go outside only to do their business so I guess you can classify them both stictly indoor dogs.

Here is my problem. I have a large bowl that I try to keep full of water at all times. But the puppy has decided that he simply cannot satisfactorly drink from the bowl without immersing both front feet up to the elbows. This results in a major puddle around the water dish and water tracked all over the rest of the house. He has always done this. I got him when he was 6-weeks old and he is almost four months old now. <The people from whom I got him say the entire litter has the same proclivity [Roll Eyes] >. I have tried raising the dish above floor level, but he still insists on going swimming.

What I need to know...does anyone have any suggestions an how I can keep sufficient water available without the constant drenching of my carpets? [Confused] Is there some kind of watering system that can maybe be homemade or purchased that allows access to noses and tongues only...not feet?

I suppose he may eventually outgrow this. He does know I am not happy with him when he goes swimming. But he is very smart and very stubborn. [Flaming Mad] I just need to know if anyone else has or has had this problem and if you were able to fix it. There is no access to a faucet <as in a utility room> and I live in a very small house, lacking in space for much of anything too big.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. [Smile]

Lyn

They have all different types of watering dishes that go from self watering dishes that have a smaller openings and ones that are constantly moving. I have the one that is constantly moving and my bloodhound always drags the top off and plays with the filter. my only other suggestion is have scheduled and supervised watering of your pups, this way you can instantly correct the pup when he goes swimming and he may be able to correct the habit. Also, if that doesnt work than I suggest getting a lot of cheap runners or keep a large beach towel by the laundry room door so you can wipe there paws... I don't know that's a hard behavior to correct..

Try a Buddy Bowl - it's designed so it doesn't spill when tipped over, but it also works for dogs that like to play in the water dish. I think you can buy them as Petco and PetSmart - not sure though - I got mine at a dog show last year.
