hi i am new here. i was hoping to find supporters for a problem a lot of dog owners are facing, breed banning. many local governments are trying to tell us what kind of dogs we can't have. if you are against breed banning go to www.petitiononline.com and sign a petition. miami is trying to pass legislation making it illegal to own pitbulls. breed banning does not work. dogs that are aggressive belong to people who are usually not law abiding citizens. whats more, illegal dogs do not have access to veternary services which means no spaying/neutering, no vacinations including rabies

Hi!I agree with you!Breeds should not be banned.Individuals should be banned.People who don't know how to raise a dog should not have ANY dog!And most bites that occur in USA are caused by Jack Russel Terriers and not pittbulls or Rottweilers! But I think no breed Should be banned!!!!

I don't agree that breeding should be banned. But to be honest there are some people out there that are breeding their dogs for fun. That should be stopped. Thankyou for bringing this topic up. [Smile]

Yes that definately shouldn't be illegal Dezz. You should start a campaign against it and hopefully the police will come to their senses! How can they put a dog down for nothing when he could have a great life ahead of him?!?! [Flaming Mad] Ok now I'm angry, I better calm down. Lets kill them instead. [Wink] [Mad]

I agree with everyone that breed banning should not take place. I currently own one pit bull/german shepherd mix who is a GREAT dog. He loves my kids, other dogs, pretty much everyone (except the mailman).

I do think though that humane societies and rescue organizations need to do a better job of screening dogs. I recently had to put down my dog, Wilson (pit bull boxer mix). He was a super dog - except that he bit strangers and other dogs. And it wasn't just a nip - he was out to get them. After he severly bit our neighbor - I decided to do the responsible thing and put him down. I live 3 houses away from elementary schools, and couldn't run the risk of him biting a child.

What makes me mad, is that the humane society went on and on about what a great dog he was. Then the day when I went to pick him up, they told me he had a bite history - and had attacked a dog at the humane society. By this time I was in love with him - and thought I could work him out of his aggressions. Well, tons of training lessons later - he still had the same problems. Except it got worse, because now he had a family that loved him - and he had to protect his family.

It's hard decisions to make - but there are some dogs out there that should be put down.

*I do not feel that pit bulls as a whole should be banned though!

I hate to say it, and it may not be a popular thing on this forum, but the breed banning is comming about due to the lack of action from uresponsible owners. I owned a rot one of those 130 pounders, and yes he was a dangerous dog, but I made sure no one was ever harmed by that dog, I was responsible toward the meter readers, the mail man, the paper boy, the phone guy this dog never harmed anyone I made sure of that... can we say that about all owners? What we are seeing is just the beginning, if we owners only allow responsible owners to own the more agressive dogs, the problem will soon disapear and the regulations will get relaxed and go away as well?

I agree that breeds of dogs should not be banned.

It seems to be the "humans" that train the bad habits.

Our next-door neighbor has a pit bull/rottweiler mix. You know we we very apprehensive when she first arrived.

We "made friends" with the dog, gave her owner-approved snacks, and now she is very friendly with her owner and us . . . but will bark & snarl forever at a stranger in her vicinity.

Thanks for letting my voice my opinion!

We tried to take every precaution with our pit/boxer mix. Accidents do happen though, and because of accidents that happened with him - he had to be put down. We tried training - it didn't work - he was just very protective of his family.
Unfortunately, some terrible dog owner either mistreated this dog - or didn't train him or socialize him properly - and he developed bad habits.
Which since we're on the subject of bad dog owners - does it irritate anyone else that people who are convicted of neglecting their animals only receive fines? If you ask me - they should be locked up and made to suffer whatever they put their animals through!

I don't like the thought of breed banning, but I would rather breeds be completely banned than have fights. Of course, it will still happen, but the incidents will be cut down.

The whole theory behind breed banning is that you won't have people out there fighting dogs. The sad reality is that these people either move on to different breeds of dogs or mixes.

Breed banning encourages these dog fighters to find loopholes, while responsible owners are made to look like their dogs are vicious man eating monsters.

Instead of breed banning - the goverment should look at going after the people who are fighting or mis-treating their animals. It doesn't matter the breed - any dog can become viscous under the right circumstances.
