Hi everyone,
I'm new here and I'm happy to have found this forum. My daughter and I just adopted
a long-haired chihuahua on Tuesday. We drove for 2 hrs. to pick him up from his foster home.
He's 2 1/2 yrs old, 6 lbs. He's well-trained dog and he's housebroken. He was groomed,
microchipped, all vaccine and supposedly crate-trained. However, when we bought a crate
yesterday & we tried to put him in there he was resistant but we got him in & he didn't cry
or bark or made any noises. I feel guilty putting him in there. I just want him to get used to
it just in case we need to leave him for a couple of hours, although not everyday. I just don't
want him roaming around my house cuz he might have an accident, so far he hasn't had one yet.
My other concern is, I was told by his foster parent that he eats 2x a day & he likes lamb & rice
which I bought, however, he only eats about 8-10 pieces of it & I need to hand fed him
cuz he didn't want to go to his food bowl. I can't be doing this everytime esp. I go to work &
my daughter will be going to school soon. He needs to be able to eat by himself. It looks like
he's been spoiled by the foster parent. Am I just putting too much attention on this dog or what?
I'm stressing out too much. I'm always worried that he might pee or poo on the carpet or floor.
How do I know when to take him out to do his thing. He didn't even want to try to "go" in the patio. What do
I do? My daughter likes to have this dog but now I feel too constraint. I have another concern,
can we take a dog to a store or mall? Are we allowed to get in carrying a dog?
Please advice. Thanks! [Confused]

Well to all those questions I think the answer is that your dog needs to get use to being in a different home and being looked after by different people. It will take the dog sometime to get use to it so you will just have to be patient. About your last question, it depends which mall you go to, some allow dogs in the premises some don't. I hope this was good advice. [Wink]

Thanks! I guess I just have to be patient. So far he's been a really good dog, no accident whatsoever. I crated him for 2 nights already & he's been ok, no whining or crying. I was able to relax a little. It's just something that you have to get used to, I guess.

I agree that he needs some time to adjust. If it continues though, you'll need to take him to a vet. If he's been crate-trained completely, he'll be fine to leave out loose in the house. You'll need to take him out several times a day to use the bathroom. He might have a couple of accidents while he's adjusting to your schedule.

Yes patience is probably the only answer. Well if your dog does have an accident don't get mad at him the first time because he won't be totally use to the house yet. If the accidents do occur regularly then do tell him off. [Big Grin]

Hi There,
I think you need to be patient and give the dog time to settle down after all it will take a while for the dog to familiarise itself with new surroundings. After a dog has been removed from its stable home it will always take a little time to get used to new rules and procedures etc.

Really for that matter dogexpert, you basically coppied what I said and worded it differently. It's fine for more than one person to say the exact same thing.

Now Now people, there's no need to fall out with each other over this!
We are all in this together and some of us are bound to have similar opinions to express and I think that people agreeing on something is much better than a bunch of us giving a whole host of different answers.
If this were the case we would have one **** of a confused initial poster on our hands!

I'm sorry Dawn but you don't need to shout at me like that, there was no reason for it. Please let's just settle down and forget about it.
