I just have to share my bad vet experience from today. I took both my dogs in. Chance (3 year old pit mix) need a distemper shot and Neko (3 month old husky) need a puppy check up.
Neko went fine. Then it was Chance's turn. All he needed was one stupid distemper shot. The last time he was at the vet he growled at her - so she sent him home and made him come back with a muzzle. This time we had a different doctor - and he and Chance seemed to get along, so I didn't think the muzzle was necessary.
Well, we put Chance up on the table - and all **** broke loose. He jumped off the table and got all upset. So the vet decides to just give him the shot on the floor. Chance freaked out whenever the vet came near him with the shot. So then the vet tech came in to try to help us hold him down. It didn't work. Then they decided that it would be best to try to muzzle him - just in case he bet. Well - to make a long story short, we ended up fighting with him for a while. Then we took him outside, where I got the muzzle on and they gave him the shot outside. The vet tech and I have scratches all up and down our arms from him. He's only 40 lbs, but he put up a good fight.
Then, during the commotion, my fecal sample for Neko got mixed up with another dogs. They told me it was OK - but I got a call at work later saying that he had worms.
The vet said that next time we bring Chance in - he'll give us sedatives to give him before we leave the house. I told the vet that I wasn't bringing him in again - he's my husband's dog - he can deal with it!
Thanks for listening to me vent - I just needed to get it out. I'm better now.

Plus - add to it Friday night my sister and 4 year old son were in a car accident. My sister was ok - but my son fractured his pelvic bone. So now I have a puppy, barely potty trained that needs medication twice a day and worming once a week, an older dog that I need to practically sit on to worm once a week - and a 4 year old on bed rest!
Calgon take me away!!!!

Wow I'm really glad that we're here to listen.
My dogs are so good at the vet. Molly did try to hide under the chair the last time I took her but I've never had to deal with a situation like you described.
Yeah maybe your husband will have better luck getting his dog to behave.
Good luck.

Did you ever consider leaving the room and let the vets handle the dog? some times dogs are in a protective mode and once the "part of their pack" is missing from the equasion the agressive behavior ceases to exist as they have no one to protect.

I don't think that he's trying to protect me - he's pretty much thinking about himself. I think next time he goes in that we will sedate him.
On the bright side - at least it's another year before he has to go in!
(Wasn't there a full moon recently too?)

Yes, there is nothing wrong with sedating the dog a bit. I hope he takes to it well without any side effects.
I was about ready to do that to Mickey a while back.
When we moved he howled for days. I couldn't sleep. It was a big move for Mickey. I had just put down my other dog, Scotty, and we moved - all within the same month. I felt so bad.
A neighbor suggested that we use a sedative. She's very knowledgeable about dogs.
But, she had another suggestion that worked wonderfully. She said to put some of our clothes out in his dog house and where he sleeps. It worked. After a few days, he was fine.
I know that this doesn't help, but I do want you to know that I too have considered using a sedative.

I did use a sedative for my last dog when we first got him. He had SEVERE seperation anxiety. He mangled a wire crate, chewed threw a plastic crate and scratched his way through a door. I tried giving him the sedative before we left, but that didn't seem to help. It was an over the counter sedative, so it may not have been as effective as something the vet would give us.
Also - we're working with Chance to get him used to the muzzle. Right now it's hanging up in my kitchen for a while - so he can get used to seeing it around. I'll give it a couple weeks and try touching him with it.
Wish me luck on my next endeavor with him - toe nail clipping. For as much as this is my husband's dog - it seems like I do a lot of the dirty work. But he's worth it (Chance - not my husband )
