What remedy can anyone suggest for my young male golden lab eating his poop! It has been suggested to sprinkle meat tenderizer on his food; that it will make it bitter (!) I would think that would be an improvement. Help.

What kind of food are you feeding your dog? A lot of young dogs will eat their poo to make up for a deficiency in their diet.

[I used to take a thing of chili pepper with me and sprinkle it on the poop. It helped but what helped the most was picking up every bit of poo that he did. Chili pepper in the garbage pans work too.

eating their own poo is often a sign of a deficiency. make sure you are feeding a complete dry dog food as these are the best balanced foods for any dog. Other than that im afraid it can just be a habit that you have to do your best to put up with, it doesnt actually do them any harm.

I believe pet stores carry some type of additive for their food that is supposed to help stop this. I have no experience with it, so I can't tell you if it works or not.

The yellow lab youngster eating his poop was actually my good friend's dog that my dog plays with....I had suggested to her when they brought him home to put him on the natural dog food made here in Muenster, TX. and is highly recommended in several quarters. Freckles has always been on it with great results all around. She fed him that for awhile, but decided she could do just as well with a less expensive brand available at the grocery store. I pointed out to her that if she would look back, that was about the same time that Jake began his nasty habit. I convinced her to get him back on Muenster and BINGO... it seems to have stopped now. So obviously it was a nutritional deficiency of some sort. She had a problem keeping his poop cleaned up as she has a big ivy ground cover area he would go in...she couldn't find most of it. Anyway, the Muenster seems to have solved the problem. [Smile]

Also, the problem with female Freckles mounting her female playmate Shelby seems to have worked itself out once the "alpha" position was established...funny thing they seem to be on neutral ground and equality reigns!!!!
Thanks for the input from everyone. [Smile]
