Hi Everybody, this is my first time posting a question, and I'm hoping someone can help me. I have two dogs, a 2yr old female black lab, and a 6 month female collie, and both of them are spayed. Well the other night, I found my Lab mounting my collie, I couldn't believe me eyes, and what I was seeing. I'm just wondering if anyone knows why this would be happening, I thought only male dogs mounted like that? If anyone has experienced this, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

It's probably just a dominance issue that she's establishing. As long as she doesn't start getting mean, don't worry about it. But I would definately discourage the behaviour.

My 3 year old male, Chance (who is neutered) - mounts my 5 month old Husky, Neko - all the time. He's just asserting his dominance. We tell him no - but he still does it - especially when they're playing.
I've also caught Neko trying to mount my kids. He must think he's more dominant. Luckily, we were able to put a stop to that behavior.

Thanks for the help, I've noticed she does the mounting "ritual" during play also, so it must just be a dominance thing. Thanks again!!

I really appreciated reading the comments about the mounting of your female dog. Our 2 1/2 yr. old female border collie/red heeler mix has been doing the same thing to her female lab buddy she visits often to play with. We wondered what her motive was.... someone commented she was confused about her identity! (She is spayed, as is her buddy). The dominance motivation is obviously the answer with her.... look at her ancestry and dominance is obvious. She knows she can't dominate me, so guess she is getting it out of her system any way she can. Haven't noticed her doing it recently.... maybe maturity is setting in..or reached a level of comfort with her buddy. Appreciate the sharing on the forum.
