My family is getting two Black and Tan Coonhound puppies today. I have read everything I can find on the breed at our library and I have groomed a few at my salon, but I would like to know more. Does anyone have this breed or know much about them, any information would be appreciated. Thanks

My Aunty breeds them so hang in there with me and i'll try and give you the general low-down.
Coonhounds are tracker dogs, usually very businesslike. They are descended from bloodhounds, fox hounds and the irish kerry beagle. Breeding is usually focused on coat colour as well as tracking ability and they should be a deep black with tan markings on the chest, legs and over the eyes and sides of the muzzle.
I get the feeling exercising dogs is viewed very differently in America than it is here in Britain (we would be considered cruel and totally shunned if our dogs were not formally exercised at least twice a day whereas you guys seem to have the general view that walking is an "if you have time" added bonus and once every couple of days is fine - different cultures i guess although i'll never believe dogs can be happy if not walked properly every day and formally trained at least 3 times a week) but coonhounds really do need a LOT of exercise as they can be quite difficult when under-exercised. The guide lines offered by british breeders recommend a minimum two hours of walking every day, preferably more.
Puppy training classes are also a must as early socialisation is essential.
