Hi, my yorkie boy was born on the 17th of May 2003. That would make him almost seven months old. He is still busy to get his adult teeth. My question is about his ears. I read about the ears going up and down when teething and that the hair on the ears should be kept short if it's going to stand up. My yorkie's ears does not want to stand up on its own though and because he is already almost seven months old I did not think that it would ever stand up. The hair on his ears are quite short so there's no weight that pulls down the ears. Is there ANYTHING that I can do at this late stage to help him lift his ears? The vet told me it doesn't help to "massage" the ears.

I'm not familiar with Yorkies in particular. I have a border collie/chow, and both his ears didn't become fully erect until he was almost a year old. He had a really cute one ear up, one ear down look for awhile.

Maybe he just needs more time.

My sister had a white wolf with one ear up and one down. The one ear never stood up but it was SO CUTE! He always had that "cute puppy dog look" about him, even when fully grown. Sadly, they had to give him away.

I hope that you are right and that my Yorkie's ears will stand up eventually! Not that it is that huge an issue if it doesn't. He would just look so cute if it could.

Try taping his ears up. Here's how: First shave the hair off the top one third to one half of the ears. Then fold the ear toward the front like you were closing it up vertically. Now the ear should be sticking up in a point. Wrap a piece of gauze around the ear and then secure it by wrapping scotch tape or bandage tape around the gauze. Make sure it is tight enough that it will stay on for a while but not so tight that it cuts off the circulation in the ear. If the pup gets it off in the first 5 minutes, it's too loose, try again a little tighter this time. His ears should be taped for 3 days. After that take them down and leave them alone till they start drooping again. Then tape them but this time leave them up for 24 hours, then take them down til they droop again. Keep doing this until they stay up permanently. Some ears only need 3 days, others need 3 weeks. It depends on the size and strength of his ears.
Hope this helps [Smile]

Well, I have thrown caution to the wind! My vet told me that it is ridiculous to tape dogs' ears up and to massage them; none of these would work and leave the poor dog's ears in peace! Well, Groomer D, I searched on the net about taping the ears up and found A LOT of Yorkie pages with the same advice. Well, I have tried it; last night when I got home I went to buy some masking tape and taped my poor Rolo's ears up! Needless to say, he HATES it! And to make it worse, my Chow loves it; he pulls and scratches on poor Rolo's ears, he think I put it there for his amusement!

Well, I will not give up, I will let you know if it works…
