IMO, crate training is the only way to go. The crate is very useful and sometimes absolutely necessary even at later ages, it's not stressful on the pup, it's not stressful on you, and they don't have a chance to learn that pottying in the house is ever acceptable.

Here's great advice I got from a pet psychologist: similar to the crate training method. Keep them in a confined area just large enough for them to move about (like a kitchen)but to small to them to leave if they leave a "surprise." Naturally, they don't want to stay with their mess but they have no choice when confined. Get them on a schedule of taking them out to do their thing and return to the confined space. Gradually increase the size of the space when they learn that they will be stuck with their mess if they don't wait until they go outdoors. Here's the pet psychologist; Dr. Warren Eckstein. You can look him up on any search engine.

IMO, that will not work completely. I know that I don't have a room in my house small enough for that (unless it was a closet, and no I'm not leaving my dog locked up in a closet). They will even willingly go in a crate if it is any too large at all. Also, I'm not sure what breed these pups are, but most medium sized and up pups can easily get over a baby gate. My toy poodles could jump ours if they got it in their mind to.

I gated my pup off in certain areas of the house. We're kind of lucky that we have a long hallway from our back door. It worked pretty good for him. Just keep letting your dog out about ever half hour. Sometimes it takes a while - but they catch on eventually.

all i have to say is NEVER EVER EVER rub there nose in it or punish them in any way from doing it where they are not allowed

when i was toliet traning my pup my cosuin told me to rub hid nose in the and smack him then take him to a stop where he is allowed to [Flaming Mad] (i didnt do this and never would) and although he said it worked on his dog i belive it would only teach the dog that ur a mean scary person do u wont this?

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.
