My 5 yo male Aussie has always, when we are home, taken a few pieces of his food before he eats, walks in the room where we are and drops it on the floor. Then and only then will he go back and eat the rest of his food. Does anyone here have any idea what this might mean. Also, he will never eat when we are not home, and will never eat HIS food if we are standing around in the room where his food is located. He prefers I believe, even though he is not protective of his food, to be in the room by himself when he eats. Please help if you know why he does this dropping the food thing. Thanks

My dog's eating habits are similar but different. He'll bring a mouthful of food out to where we are and eat it, go back and get more, and repeat that. He won't eat when I'm gone, even if my husband's home (I had my dog for 10 years before I had my husband). He will eat if we're in the room with him, if he's hungry.
I just chalk it up to an eating idiosyncrasy since it doesn't hurt anyone or anything. Sorry I don't have any suggestions. I just wanted to let you know that your dog's not the only one with strange eating habits.

Bearsmom -- Freckles is the same way. Sunday is the time she is left the longest.. when we go to church and lunch with friends... she is outside with her water and food. But, she will not eat or drink until we are home (the commode is her favorite!..so can't use any type of solution in the tank.)

Seeing that he is the "Alpha-male" in the family and therefore needs to protect and supply his family with food (in his eyes of course) and that the Leader of the pack gets to eat firstly and alone, maybe he thinks that he should bring you your share so he can go and eat in peace without any disturbance?
