Hi all,
New to this site. just looking to get some tips on my new puppy/dog....she is 9 month old dachshund....was given to us because the house she was in had another dog....was agressive and tried to kill her....we are very lucky to have her but I know that they have special needs/diet restrictions....anyone have tips or site ideas?....we have no other dogs, she is very calm and submissive...no agressive behavior whatsoever....she just rolls over and puts paws up if she is approached by anything new....kind of sad....thanks to any answers.....and glad to join,
Shari

you need to work with the dog asap, or that submission will quickly turn into aggression. i had a pit with a similar condition, scared of his shadow etc, i just taught him some tricks, got him so obedience, and he slowly regained all his confidence back. BUt be careful to not overly push him or baby him!

Obedience classes would be a really good idea. They have puppy kindgergartens available, if she's really young.
Has your vet said anything about special dietary needs? A friend of mine has a mini doxie, and he eats Eukanuba or Iams or something like that. It's just higher-end dog food.
Good luck!

It's great that you have adopted this dog. The best bet always with any animal that has been mistreated is a lot of love. When you see her roll over in submission, just rub her belly and let her know it is alright. Pick her up and get her back on her feet letting her know it is alright. Time, patience and lots of love will bring her around. If there is a Petsmart around, take her there and start socializing her slowly. The more socialization she gets the sooner she will come out of her shell. Petsmart does offer puppy training, but speak with a trainer there first and explain the problem. She can also suggest ways to help your little darling out of her shell. The sure cure though is a lot of love.

i have a mini-doxie and feed him natural balance. please please please dont feed yours iams or eukanuba.....do some research on iams and you will see what i mean. dog food should not equal cruelty.
as far as making your little one feel comfortable and confident.....give lots of attention and love. that is really all they need. socializing is a good idea as long as he/she is comfortable with it. mind was chased by a dog once and it took him 3 or 4 months before he was okay around dogs again.
also - get a kong and some squeak toys.....mine has so many he doesn't know what to do with them all....and so he stays away from my furniture and shoes as a result.
doxies are my favorite dog - they have so much love and want to get so much love. have fun!!!

Iams and Eukanuba ......not sure if its cool to post links on this forum (some don't allow it) -- but check out this link http://www.uncaged.co.uk/iams.htm
this link is one of many that outlines what has become an outrage in animal rights circles. you can take it as truth and not feed you animal their products, or you can write it off as propoganda. for me - I choose not to feed my little guy their products. the more knowledge you have to more you can make informed decisions about what corporations you support. i'm not some left wing spaz - just someone that likes to know what's up.
good luck!

I had a doxie mix that we had to put to sleep because of a disk problem. I didn't knwo about the disk issues with doxies and I don't know if I wouldn't made the same decision if I had known more. His disk was ruptured and he was in stage 3 of this disk problem and they recommended surgery. This was on christmas eve and he was in an emergency clinic and they quoted us about $3500 for the surgery. Since I didn't know the vet, and thought the cost was high, I asked if we could give it a couple of days to decide (until I spoke to my regular vet). They said yes, but didn't tell me that the problem could get quickly worse, and my dog become permanently paralyzed (stage 5) with no help of recovery after surgery, if I waited just 24 hours. It turns out, it worsened and he had to be put to sleep. Had I known the possible seriousness of disk problems in dachshunds, I wouldn't brought him into my vet when I first say signs of trouble, I wouldn't had the surgery done and I might've even had the surgery done in stage 5 (not sure of this) because I've read that they can recover. It happened very quickly and I wish I had been informed of these issues in dachshunds. I still would've gotten the dog (I since then got another doxie mix and my new mini dachs is arriving on feb.12) but I would've made a better informed decision.
I would recommended going to the Dachshund Club of America (http://www.dachshund-dca.org/TOC.html). They have a lot of links and a lot of information. Also, search under "dachshund disk problems" and it'll give you a lot of information.
Congratulations! I love love love the breed! I'll always have a doxie! let me know how he's doing!
