I have a 16 week old Blue Heeler x Kelpie, he had been abandoned on farm and when we found him he was about 6 weeks. I just cant believe how intelligent he is for such a young puppy. I also have a 6 yo pomeranian who is really intelligent but that only came about thru alot of work and took till she was about 4. But, this puppy just picks things up straight away. He can sit, drop, shake, roll over, brings his dish at dinner and is almost bringing the paper in in the morning. He really watches and listens to me and seems to know what I'm talking about, whereas all the other puppies I know from training seem to be distracted and hyper. Does anyone else have a puppy like this? Is it usual for a puppy of this age to be able to do so much?

The breeds in him are quite intelligent. Herding breeds are known for their remarkable intelligence because they had to figure out things for themselves. I haven't seen such a young pup showing that kind of intelligence but I don't find it hard to believe since he has two really intelligent breeds in him.

yep totally normal - and a border collie would be even more impressive (working strain one anyway - showing collies has ruined their work instinct) Lou

The border/heeler mix we have was amazing as a pup. We bored our friends to death going on and on about her abilities. She will be 3 in Feb. and I swear she tries to talk!
