I watched a show on TV this weekend about designer dogs - crossing different breeds to come up with new breeds. A couple examples were lab/poodle mixes, cocker spaniel/poodle mixes - and one that cracked me up - a little mini Husky (I forget the name - it was an Eskimo word that meant something like little dog).
So - I was wondering what everyone thought of these?

C.o.c.k.-a-poos and Peek-a-poos have been around for a long, long time. They're not really breeds, though. (The censor didn't like the idea of a cocker spaniel/poodle cross, I guess. )
I prefer mutt-dogs, personally. For so long, breeders bred for confirmation only that they forgot the importance of the dogs' minds. Line breeding has also led to a lot of physical problems with dogs - the negative attributes pass down just as easily as the positive ones. I'm also a firm believer in hybrid vigor.
Honestly, though, it sounds like people are trying to call those dogs something they're not, to add some sort of prestige to having a crossbred. New breeds don't occur after a single crossing. [ January 21, 2004, 09:54 AM: Message edited by: bearsmom ]

I don't like the idea of pups for bucks at all which is the driving force behind most of these breeders. I know someone that paid $1000 for a "labradoodle". Why? Sure, he's adorable, but so are the puppies at the shelter. There are so many health & mental issues that aren't being considered. Once the fad is over there's a bunch of homeless dogs that need to be placed.

Actually one of these mixed breeds has a much better chance of being healthy than a purebred, but there really is no reason for them to be so expensive, they're not even registerable. I've never seen them going for that much, that's ridiculous.
