I have been led to believe that the larger breeds seem to have shorter life spans than the little guys. But, you hear all kinds of opinions that don't always prove to be true.

Dont know how average life expectancy can be called an opinion. Its pretty scientific.
Larger dogs have shorter life expectancy. Irish Wolfhounds are 6-8 years. Danes are listed anywhere from 6-10 years.
Lots of factors involved. Theres just more health issues in general with large dogs than small ones. Dysplasia, bloat, SAS, etc etc.

its so hard to spend 1200-1500 plus on a dog for him to croak in 6 years!!!i love big dogs, but that life span is so scary, in 6 years your just getting to know your buddy, kna mean???

Don't forget - the bigger the dog - the bigger some of the vet bills. But Danes are awesome dogs - if at some point I got another dog AND money were not a problem - I would get a dane. Maybe one day.....

A well bred Dane *can* live to be 10 + yrs of age. But *senior* applies to any Dane 6 yrs old and older. Danes lives may not be long, but the love and devotion they give, while with you, no dog would ever be able to measure up to.
Some lines are known for their longevity, so if you are considering a Dane, look for a breeder who can prove their Danes have a normal lifespan, and who has properly screened all of their breeding stock, to assure that their are no hidden killers in their line, such as Cardio.
And as far as spending $$$, and the dog not living long. tHAT is about the most Twisted statement I have EVER heard!!! If you value your $$$ that much, you can't AFFORD a Dane, period. They ARE expensive to Vet, feed, HW Meds, and Flea treatments. Not to mention Dog beds, bowls, leashes and Pooper Scoopers, ALL have to be in JUMBO SIZE :-)
Danes aren't for everyone, but they are GREAT Dogs for anybody willing to open their Heart and Home to them.

look i dont know about some people with money growing on trees, but a dog is sometimes more than a pet, but it is also an investment, you wouldnt by a car knowing it would break down in 6 years would you?

We have a Great Dane puppy that will be 9 months this month. We did a lot of research before getting him. Most things I've read say average life expectancy is 8 years. But I have heard of a lot of Danes that live to be 13 years old! I sure hope Vader does!!
