i was talking to a presa canrio dealer, and we were talking about schutzund, he kept reiterating (sp)that schutzund should only be done by a pro, because of the amount of time needed, and the huge margin of error if done only a little wrong, i like the working/protection apects of large dogs, but is schutzund only to be left to a professional?

There is a huge margin of error here. Once a dog is "turned on" for protection unless you are a proffesional andreally know what you are doing "turning the dog off" can be hard to impossible. Esspecially with these protection breeds.
-------------------- Lets teach the public to spay and neuter pets and leave breeding up to the experts, to help decrease the thousands of animals destroyed monthly in shelters and pounds around the world.

I would say definately let a professional handle it. Of course, you could talk to the trainer - and see if he/she would include you in the training - watching and helping out - that sort of thing.
Unless you're really experienced with protection work - I'd leave that up to someone else who's had more experience.
