Hi, I am adopting a rescue dog tomorrow. She is a english springer spaniel and is 5 years old. I understand that she an alpha dog. She is very well trained in obidence and is very loving with people, but has bitten a few other dogs. She got so bad that her owners had to give her up because she was bitting her sisters. They said that she would clamp down on them and not let go. What I am wondering is how she will be with my male cats. I am a little nervous about that. Could anyone tell me if they know anything about this? Also, is there a way to train her or stop her from doing this?

have you socialized her (slowly) around the cats, i mean before you sign the papers and bring her home brought a cat to her, and check the reaction, at that age im not sure if she can break her habits, but you never know!

I have brought her home now and she seems to be fine with my 2 cats. I took her to the vet today and she growled at a dog right next to us. I am a little concerned, since I have never had a springer with an agression problem. If anyone knows of a way to change her behavior, let me know.

every springer ive ever met has had a problem with other dogs to some extent. My pointer was attacked by a pair and as a result will attack springers on sight. It a tough breed to socialise properly and can be very unpredictable around other dogs. This is because springers actually display the least natural behavioural communication skills of all breeds (they are the tactless oafs of the dog world) and so constantly make "mistakes" when interacting with other dogs. I have a springer who is the easiest going dog in the world. I can bring him anywhere at all and never have a problem.
What I would suggest would be to contact your local springer rescue contract person and ask them. Also, you could call a reputable breeder of springers (which you could find on-line at the springer-rescue site). Also, many shelters have behavioralists (I'm not exactly sure they're called that) that will help you train the dog. I recently saw a special on this issue on Animal Planet but can't remember exactly how they trained the dog, but I do remember it was do-able. Don't give up especially since he's fine with your cats. I believe the dog can get past this. Keep us posted! And good luck!
