wow...well, thre could be a lot of different reasons: could have fleas (even in the cold weather!! Fleas can lay dormant for up to 90 days!), could be that she has a skin irritation (from the dry, cold weather), could be that she is causing herself a little hotspot, which is a bad cycle, and the more she rubs, the more it itches, so the more she rubs!
Basically, check out her skin, down near the base of the tail, see black specks? Then it is fleas. Check out all over, if she has dry, flakies, could be she needs a good conditioning treatment, just get some Aveeno and dump her in the tub for a good half hour with that on her--do not overbathe her!
If she is rubbing the same spot on her body, and it becomes inflamed, then I would take her to the vet, she could be causing herself a hotspot, and that would need treatment.
otherwise, she could be just having fun, and being silly! Hope that helps! Dena

could be that that spot has a particular smell. my dog rolled in feces once... was terrible! she came home all happy and smelled SO BAD! i would check out the skin as well as the spot on the lawn (if it is the same spot everytime).

there's a tom cat comes into our garden and marks its "territory" the dogs all LOVE to roll in that particular spot, i would suggest that as a likely explanation.

I am inclined to go along with Lou3 .... Freckles roams the yard to find an odor she can roll on. She actually sticks her rear in the air and rubs her side jaws and shoulders. Such a dainty little girl!!!! We live where we get opossums, and other night prowlers (and a big cat from down the road) and I am sure this is the draw. I have to keep her out of the pasture next to the house after the cattle have been turned in to graze. The cow paddies they leave when they move on are just so enticing! [Roll Eyes]
