Yesterday, I noticed that my 4-year old red heeler's tail is hanging down. Usually her tail points/curls upward, especially when she is excited. But since yesterday, her tail has hung straight down, almost like she is tucking it between her legs. Taking her for a walk usually gets her very excited and the tail goes crazy...but since yesterday, even when going on a walk, her tail was straight down and she didn't seem able to wag it at all. She has also been much less active since yesterday. (She is otherwise a healthy dog with no other problems and this has never happened before).

I will call the vet in the morning but I wanted to see if anyone has ever had this happen?

Thanks! :-D

It happened to a dog i had once - turned out she had damaged her tail when it got caught in a door. We had Liddy's tail amputated cause the spinal cord was damaged. The damage could correct itself but be prepared for an operation.

keep in mind that if the tail is down and between the dogs legs that she/he could be scared or terrified of something...cause all dogs will bring there tail down between there legs if they are scared...

All of my labs have suffered from this from time to time. Usually after a hard day of hunting/swimming. It could likely be a sprained tail. I give canine buffered aspirin to help them out. If there was no significant accident that might be all it is.
