I just got a 1month old pug (Boozer's the name) and have not been placing him near my resident 3month old shih tzu (Cocoa) coz mainly I've been quite worried that Cocoa might assert his dominance right on given that he's triple Boozers size and Boozer's not ready for that being just a month old. Well, as it has turned out, Boozer's got this assertive way of running head on to Cocoa and just wants to constantly bite his tail or anything he can reach! He's so brave and seems to me like he's always in a charging mode with cocoa (and he's just 1month old!!!) Cocoa's frightened and at the same time I can sense that he's kinda getting agitated already. Are pugs really that assertive? I've seen the parents and they look just fine, champ line. I'm thinking maybe pugs are really this way? am i rite? At his very early age, he knows how to snarl while biting his towel, viciously wagging the towel from left and right. He also loves biting my fingers and toes...and believe me, his teeth are sharp!!! Could someone pls tell me if I should expect things to get better or are pugs really difficult to handle? thanks a bunch!!!

It sounds like Boozer's just acting like a puppy. My old dog (Bear, 14 1/2 years old) used to act that way to our old dog (Jake) when he was a puppy. Bear's helped raise a lot of puppies in his life, and almost every single one of them did the same thing to him. From what I've seen, it's not uncommon for puppies to try to initiate play with older dogs. The older dogs will either play with them or stop them in their tracks. Unless the boys start fighting, I'd let them play and sort out the pecking order.

It sounds like Boozer's just rambunctious! Have fun. [Smile]

Thanks for the advice bearsmom! But do you think it's wise that I allow Boozer, who's only 1month old, to pester Cocoa, given that cocoa's triple his size! Cocoa's been so passive and patient with him, just allowing him to crawl over him and bite whatever he can, but I'm thinking if Cocoa gets agitated, can Boozer withstand a bit of aggression being JUST 1month old (barely 5weeks old). Or do you think I should wait it out a bit like give it 2-3 more weeks, atleast he'll be nearing 2months and he'll be more equipt to stand up to Cocoa. Again, what do you think? [Confused]

isnt a month old a little to young for the pup to be away from the dam? there are certain dog scoial skills the dog will acquire by staying that extrea month or two weeks. and maybe what your describing is one of them.
