My 4 year old retriever has just lost his life long canine friend, who lived with (human) family near us. Is it advisable to show him his body for closure purposes?

Tough one. I have heard of dogs going to their master's wake for closure but not canine wake.

My two dogs were hit by a car. My female was in the house when it happened. We took her outside with us when we buried our boys. She got sick. It made my heart ache worse. But I do delieve it made her realize that they were gone. Dogs do feel so much for their housemates that I only think it is fair to them to let them know they are gone. Sorry about your loss. You are in my thoughts.

Yes, definately take him to see his best friend, otherwise he will wait in vain not knowing. Dogs best sense is their sense of smell, he will know. I had a lab that I took to the vet once and he was quite sick, we had to make him lie down on the metal table in the clinic. I am not kidding you all but he had tears running down his face, I had to wipe them off, he had that much, when it was over(examination) the tears dried up. sorry for your loss. ![[Frown]](frown.gif)
-------------------- I love my labs.
