Could anyone give me a brief background of the temperament/personality and maintenance level of an english bulldog? Any info helpful in making my experience as a new bulldog owner would be great!!! I'm just about to buy one and can use any useful advice. what type of food is best suited for this pup? are they large eaters, etc? I'll be bringing him to the vet tom for his initial check up but nothing beats advice and suggestions from owners who have them already or from people like you guys who simply love their dogs. temperament is placid and docile but a bit stubborn. Great with kids and normally even tempered with other dogs if socialised properly.
They do have a tendancy to get overweight which is bad as they are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. They are quite active - but in a steady sort of way normally. They like long steady walks (will walk literally all day without tiring)

HI Ruth.

I have been around Bulldogs for a long time. I recently just took BOB into my life and I can't be happier with her. Anything you'd like to know, I'll try and answer

Hi jack! how old did you get bob? I got malone at 6weeks and he's just the cutest! The thing is, i notice he has a temper. whenever he would start nipping at the kids, i would immediately reprimand him with a no and he'll instantly growl and bark at me. He's just growling at everything and evryone! He doesnt like doggie toys and will sometimes even growl at his toys! Are they really like that? Also, how did you housebreak bob? Are they really quite stubborn coz believe me, he's been the most difficult to control as compared to my two other pups. We bought a bulldog coz we heard they were great with kids....kinda doubtful of that now coz he just likes nipping and growling ALL the time! How'd you stop the nipping? His teeth are razor sharp at this young age so its really really frustrating! But we love him alot so any help or info about the breed would really be appreciated by you or anyone who also has an english bulldog! Thanks alot!

Bulldogs have always been one of my favorite breeds! They are also the only breed to attack me. I have been attacked by 2 different bulldogs in the 8 years I worked at a vet clinic. This does not make me feel any different about them. I would let a bulldog join my family any time. The trick with any dog is socializing them. Also check with your vet about your pups ability to pant. Many bulldogs because of the smushed face have problems cooling themselves down. So I don't think they make good outside dogs unless you live in good climate. I have seen 1 die from heat stroke and seen 3 others come in with heat stroke.

Gee Ruth I feel terrible for what you've gone through with him. The aggresive behaviour is something I just can't put my arms around as I've known Bulldog owners my entire life and yet have I seen an mean one. Some have been loud, but never mean.

I even have a story I was told about a small child left alone with a Bulldog and when the mother came back in the room, the child had used the Bully's BUTT for a pincushion with mom's sewing supplies and the dog was just looking up at the mother as if to say "Get this kids off me please".. So generally a pretty easy going bunch by breed. The Nipping, Yea pretty common up until about 9 or 10 months. Everyone that came through the door she would try and nip at their hands, shoes, coat tails etc. It just stopped one day.

Those puppy teeth are notorious skin shredders. Just pretend he's one of those machine with a posting that says "Caution, keep hands and feet away from this opening".

But as gunn said. There's exceptions to everything. I think alot has to do with how/where they are brought in to adulthood. Bob had accidents in the house all the way up to 7 months. Although at 7 months they were few and far between. I would say the the change in bad behaviours came quickly once it started to change. She only has problems now if she ate something that didn't agree with her. I hope you and Malone are happy, I know BOB has completely changed my life.
