well the old timers know my views on this breed so the only comment i am going to make to this is that there a number of very good reasons why these dogs are banned in many countries. Get a staffordshire bull terrier instead, they make excellent family pets.

I don't think you can lump one breed into whether they are good family pets. There's finding a reputable breeder, who is breeding for excellent temperament, and mostly I believe it's an owners responsibility in how their dogs turn out. I always say you will get out of a dog what you put into it. As to the breed itself, pits have such a bad rap and can be such a liability just owning one that I too, if looking for a terrier would go a different path.

Many many MANY pits are GREAT family dogs....dont listen when people clump dogs into categories....it is all in the upbringing and the owner.

I think the ting about Pits is they're EXTREMELY loyal and protective dogs. If raised in a family situation from birth, I se no reason why the wouldn't love the family utterly and completely (and sometimes too much). But, Staffie bulls ARE actually known as great family dogs, so that would probably be the better bet. Good luck!

Sometimes they can be aggresive but they can also be good family pets.

I have worked with many pits and I think that is all in the socialization of the pup. If they are raised in a loving home and made comfortable with everyone and everything going on around them they are great. It is when you have some moron with the stud color and leaves his dog on a chain in the backyard and has a hanging rope for training that you will have a bad dog.
I agree completely that you cannot clump a breed together because of some bad apples that are mostly caused by human interaction or lack of interaction. I own Akitas and Great Danes and both of those breeds have been noted for horrible attacks on people and children. It does not make all of these animals bad because 10 out of 10000 attack out of fear or poor socialization.
