Hello. We currently have 2 dogs, and for many reasons, are in the process of finding a home for one of them. We are going through various "rescue" services, but because he is older, the chances of him being adopted are slim. We placed a general ad through one of the agencies - and seem to have found a perfect home for him. The agency does NOT do background checks on people replying to their public ads, though.
My question is...How can we be sure he is going to a good home? I plan on delivering our dog to the home myself...but - is there a way to be sure he wont be going to a "bad" place?? I have nightmares about him being used to train "fight" dogs or something...how can I rest easier??
Thanks for any advice.

why not try and rehome him yourself. Perhaps you have a friend or a friend of a friend who will take him from you and be able to cope with his circumstances better than you can. Lou

Where are you located? What kind of reputation does this rescue have? If you don't know ask around. Or can you contact these people outside of the rescue? Ask them questions, ask for references, do a home check. Do whatever it takes to make YOU feel comfortable about where your dog is going. [ March 19, 2004, 11:44 AM: Message edited by: GretaJack ]

I would do as Greta suggests, contact the people yourself..Ask for a vet reference, ask the questions that YOU want answers to..If this rescue does not do background checks your right, the dog could be going into any situation. The rescue should have absolutely NO problem with YOU calling the potential adopters YOURSELF..I would also ask if you can do a homecheck PRIOR to bringing the dog over..Tell them you want all family members present(I do home inspections for GSD & Aussie Rescue) Look to see that this a home you want your dog living in. I would also stipulate (and even think about getting it in writing) that IF for whatever reason they can no longer keep the dog YOU will be the first person they call.. Hope this helps some Diane

Absolutely agree. I am employed at a Rescue Centre and have rehomed a few hundred dogs, and we would never rehome without a background check. I don't know what country you are in, but what rescue services have you tried? You then refered to 'agencies' infering these as an alternative to rescue services. Out of curiousity, what/who are these 'agencies'? If you are in england, I may know of them, or be able to advise you further. At the rescue services - I dont know if you mean centres with kennels here or organsisations who work from houses like the Animal Samaritans - but if they cant take in your dog for you, can you find out if they can assist you with your own rehoming? For example, they may be able to promote your dog at their centre, or add you to a 'dogs awaiting homes' list. I hope I can help?
