Hey guys, I'd like to get a dog, but still currently living with my parents who are worried about the smells and accidents that come along with owning one. I've tried to convince them that there's been many breakthroughs in dog products that greatly help with those since they owned one MANY years ago (I.E. shampoos and enzyme cleaning products for accident spots). Her main concern is actually doggie smell (the smell that's associated with someone's pup they don't bathe). Can you guys help and verify that these smells don't come along with an upkept puppy that's taken care of properly? Thanks!!

Their is a particular normal 'puppy odour' as their is with human babies - is this what they mean? This goes with time.

IMO, dog's don't really smell. Certain larger breeds may, because they pant more than smaller dogs, and all puppies have a 'puppy' smell, but it goes away very quickly. The smells from your home and everything else take away the 'odor' of the dog very quickly, because it isn't a strong odour in the first place. [Wink]

entire males stink! this smell doesnt go away and will actually get worse with time. Females and castrated males dont smell very much after they lose the little puppy smell.

Sorry Lou, beg to differ on this one, none of my entire Males have ever stunk, unless you mean of course the lifting of the leg inside. Pups do have a certain smell, but not the same doggy kind you get from older dogs. Some breeds of small dogs can smell, pugs especially, poodles, maltese and such like smaller breeds can get smelly breath from their teeth when older. I suggest a dog like a LABRADOR (lol) not biased at all here, washed every 1-2 weeks and they come up like roses.

Sorry to differ as well but Unaltered males do have an odor. It is mostly present when females are in heat. It actually smells like a skunk or a little musky.

Shadow Mist, All pups and dogs have a doggie odor after coming in from outside, or if they are not bathed properly. I bathe my dog every week to keep the doggie smell away.
I have a shih tzu and she doesn't get much of a doggie smell for I keep her clean. The odor they come in from outside with leaves their body within 5 minutes unless they are wet from the rain. You can dry the dog with a towel at that time and when the dog drys out the odor will leave.
As far as shampoos, I just use hartz from the grocery store and a little bit of people conditioner. This will keep your dog smelling good longer.
I would crate train my dog until it is house trained. Make sure the crate is small enough so that the dog can only stand up, turn around, and lay back down. This goes for if you get a puppy. If you get a dog that is already house trained you want need to do this.
As far as accidents in the house, you can clean the area with a cleaner with a neutralizer in it, which can be gotten at this site or a pet shop.
I can give you some more pointers later if you like. I'm sure you'll get lots of advice on this board.
Good luck to you and your new pup or dog!

Well I don't know what you do with your male dogs but Wally has been here with bit--es on heat and I still beg to differ with you but No Smell, He is the most lovable, adorable dog I have ever had the pleasure to look after (note: not own) If he just didn't lift his leg every time he came in the house I would have him right beside Ellie. Which by the way I must post a topic about.
