I've just bought an 8 week old Shih Tzu puppy, and i need as much help as i can get...

my first question is, at about how old should i walk my dog? my mom is saying that at the moment she is too young to be walked outside...

my second questions is, how often, and when do i need to get vaccinated?

my third, how can i clean her ears? ive heard people saying that cotton buds should never be used on a dog...

my fourth question is how often should i wash the dog, and how?

my fifth and last question, is when a dog starts to go into heat, and how often this happens, i do not wish to have my dog pregnant...

ok first of all, your veterinarian can give you all the information you need. So I HIGHLY recommend going to them first of all. It's not too early to walk your puppy, depending on weather, however, you should probly wait and let it adjust to it's new surroundings first. I don't think you have to worry about cleaning it's ears or washing it just yet. If your puppy gets muddy, you can wash it with a rag and lukewarm(not too warm) water. You can also buy special dog shampoo at the petstore if you want, just make sure you wash it out well. Don't give your dog a bath too often because it can result in skin irritation and other things. If you don't want your dog to go into heat, I recommend getting it spayed/neutered. Just take it to the vet and your veterinarian can give you ALL the info you need [Wink]

my pup came into heat for the first time around 6 mos old, but alot of people told me that was EARLY for a dog, they say usually dogs dont come into heat till about 10-12 mos of age. A vet usually wont spay/nuter a dog till 6 mos of age. as far as the shots, call the vet. As far as the bathing, i give precious a bath (or wash off) about once a week or possibly 2 weeks.Their was a post on here bout giving dogs a bath and some people said to give them a bath in baby shampoo.. I have tried this here recently and i actually like it better than the flea/tick shampoo's... the flee/tick shampoo's clog up my throat and i cant breathe so i had to find something else. As far as walking your dog, i walked Precious about 2 weeks after i brought her home.

1. Walking your dog, get her used to a collar and lead first, little walks in the garden are o.k., she is only small so don't overtire her, never take her outside your property till she has her booster shot at 12 weeks, then it has to be a week later than that, full immunity from diseases are not effected till then.
2. Vaccinations, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, then annually.
3. Ear cleaning. Yes gently wipe the inside of the ear with moist cotton balls, not tips, get her used to it now, her ears will need plucking and regular cleaning when she is older, and believe me, as a retired groomer, there is nothing worse than trying to clean and pluck a dogs ears who have never had them touched before.
4. Washing, not more than once a week, preferably every 2 weeks, you can purchase many dog shampoos and grooming products from your pet store, also get her used to this early, say at 12 or so weeks old, make sure you do it on a warm day, try not to get water and shampoo in her eyes, this will put her off, use a tub with a non slip mat, plenty of dry towels, and a hair dryer, on low, held 50 or so centimeters away, good idea to try her out with the blow dryer when she isnt wet, get her used to the sound, also helps with the sound of clippers, if you want her to be clipped at any stage, take her to the groomers at about 12 weeks so they can get her accustomed to it even if they only clip round her eyes.
5. Heat cycles can vary, she will come into her first cycle from anywhere between 6 to as late as 15 months, thereafter the norm being every 6 to 7 months, some may only cycle every 12 months. As suggested, spaying before her first heat if you don't intend to breed is better for her, her health, and you.

as mentioned befor get her familiar with a leash and immunized befor u start to take her for a walk.

vaccinations
12 weeks dhlpp(distemper,hepatitis,leptospirosis,parainfluenza,parvovirus)i think.lol
16 weeks dhlpp
about six to seven months first rabies
7 to 9 months first hwartworm test
after a year old
dhlpp yearly
heartworm test yearly
rabies every three years (after the second rabies shot which should be given a year after the first one)
bordetella yearly

when cleaning the ears make sure u dont stick the q-tip in the canal, the tip should be visible

an indor dog should be washed once a month unless it gets dirty from a walk. if washed to much the coat will begin to dry out.

get your dog spayed when she comes of age.

try to stay on top of grooming, invest in brushes that suit the coat of your breed also try to use a shampoo that suits your dog for instance if you have a white dog they sell a shampoo the is made to give a bright white finish.if the skin or coat should become dry for any reason the make a product called linatone which i find to work really well.

Sorry about misleading you on the vaccinations, I am in Australia, we don't have rabies here I was giving you our schedule. Ignore my advise on that particular question.

Cheers Sue. Enjoy your pup!!
