Hi there everyone!
I am looking for advice about going bike riding with my one year old 23 pound pug. She LOVES running alongside my bike one on one, but I am hesitant about taking her out on trails because she could get spooked or even worse, run over by another bike.
So, here is what I am thinking about doing. I went out and got a sturdy baggage carrier for the BACK of my bike (too much weight and movement for the handlebars). I also got a 21X14X9 inch basket for her to sit or lie down in. In other words, it is big enough for her to be able to sit, lie down and look out of comfortably. It is NOT, however, so big that she can run from one side to the other.
I also got her one of the those seatbelt harnesses to secure her to the basket. The strap is long enough so she can sit up, lie down, etc., but not so long that it can wrap around her neck.
So, that is what I am planning on doing. What do you guys think? Have you done anything like this? Have you ridden with your dogs? If so, how did you deal with it? Thanks in advance for any ideas!

It certain sounds like a plan. I bet you two will enjoy your time on the bike.
Bike riding with dogs running along side can be dangerous. My husband took our dalmatian for a ride/run and hooked the leash onto the handlebars (I thought he was smarter when I married him ) Needless to say, as they went down the street something caught the dog's eye-he went one way and my husband went flying. All my husband remembers is waking up on the ground with our dog licking his face...that and walking home with a bent up bicycle and a bouncy dog.
good luck...your plan sounds better.

Don't be TOO hard on your bruised and battered hubby. I tried the same thing with attaching the leash to the handlebars. I had BETTER results than your husband (I didn't get hurt and my bike is in one unbent piece) but Spirit DID bolt to one side and almost pulled me over and my little pug is a LOT smaller than a dalmatian. That is when I started thinking about another plan.

Thanks Dave!
I thought of the trailer myself, but as much as I LOVE my dog, I did NOT love the idea of spending over $300 for a trailer. If I had kids that would be the right age to ride in it (or was planning on it), I could justify the expense. I think my husband would KILL me if I came home and said "Hi honey! I just spent over $300 to take the dog bike riding!
It IS a really good idea though!
