My 3.5 month old puppy, Molly, is being pretty hard to socialize. She's relitively afraid of large dogs. She stays a few feet away from people before she decides they're safe (about 30 seconds), but everone thinks after that she's a real pleasure to be around. We live near other dogs who all play in the same yard, and it took her a little while to warm up to them. She was perfectly fine with the Westie (she's calm and they're both the same size), but with the ginat german shepherd mix (zeke, male, 9months old), it took a while. Now, though, she and Zeke are best buds and love to play together. Theres also a new Jack russel in the neighboorhood, and they met last night, and did really well with eachother.
But anyways, how do I go about socializing her in such a way that she won't fear any kind of person or dog later in life? I can't wait to take her to the dog p[arks when she's older, but i don't want her to be afraid.
Thanks!

What kind of puppy? Sounds like she's socializing just fine. I don't think you really want her running up to strangers do you?

She's a lab/border collie/pit bull (fast learner). No, I don't want her really running up to strangers, but I don't want her to fear them, you know? My other dog we got when she was 2 and she's been dog and human aggressive her entire life, so I just don't want another problem like that. I want to give my puppy the good socialization and love that my other dog never got, you know?

You're doing fine. As she gets bigger she will gain confidence. The more interaction she can get with people and other dogs the better.

Sounds to me like your pups doing ok also. Keep it up. Take her to lots and lots of different places to meet all sorts of people, get used to crowds etc. consistance is the key to her getting used to people and other dogs. Taking her to as many places as you can. If she does fear a person or dog, don't try and soothe her, just ignore her. If she sees your not afraid then chances are she will relax. Have you looked into puppy preschool at all? then when she's old enough an obedience training group.

I take my 5 month old to all the parks in our city. She has met countless dogs and seen all the sights. We make great fun of it and I think that is the best way. I work on her training too. She can heel and go right on by other dogs if need be. It's all about preparing for the future and making life easy.
