I live in a one bedroom apartment in town, well a small town. I own an american rott. 7 months old now and have had it since it was 1 1/2 months old. some of my friends are kinda upset about me having that large of a breed in that kind of living space. He has been well trained by me and have a great bond to the point that he is a mommas boy. he is not violent in any way, i mean the kids lay right on top of him while he eats his food, most say hes a big teddy bear and is allowed in most of the stores in town becuase of his personality. he has some room to play in the apartment and gos for walks everyday when i get out of work. There is a park less then a block away that i take him to, and also to my friends house who has a big back yard and a puppy of their own. their puppy is about 4 months younger and very small but they act like they are best friends, lol i mean the puppy will go get a dog cookie and give it to mine and eat the crumbs. They play in the back yard without supervision since my dog takes great pains to play with the puppy but not hurt her. Hes a great dog but a couple of my friends are pushing for me to give him to a friend of theirs that lives out in the country saying that he would have more room to play and another rott to play with. My question is, should i let my rotty go? i dont want to give him up, i mean like i said hes a mommas boy even at 7 months old, and whines when im not there, and after playing for a couple of hours sits by the door and wants to go home. Would it be better to give him to someone else or keep him? i want whats best for him.

This is just my personal opinion, but your dog seems to be very well cared for, socialized and obedient. And even though you live in a small place, it seems he gets lots of exercise. I would say, he's your dog and you shouldn't listen to anyone else.... just because he would be with another rottie and have more room to run, doesn't mean it would be better for him. I mean, it seems to me he is used to being indoors, where would they keep him? Outside in a kennel?

I guess you have to ask yourself if you really think it is best for him....

sounds to me like you are one of the very few people who actually trains and exercises your dog properly. I say keep the pup, it sounds like he's happy as larry and far better off where he is than going somewhere he might not get as much attention. Space in the house isnt really that important as long as he gets plenty of time outside to run.
You obviously take good care of your dog, dont let anyone tell you otherwise.

Tell your friends to "GET LOST". Many full grown rotts spend their days in dog runs or kennels and never get to go for walks. It's not the size of the living space but of the heart the person who owns the dog.

By no means is a country dog better off than yours.

You love your dog, he loves you, that's one of the most important parts of owning a dog, does this friend have a female and you a male?
Keep your dog, if he is not causing you any problems in your apartment, life changes constantly, you may not always live in an apartment, and in the back of your mind you will always be wondering, how is my best buddy going, if you give him away.

Thank you thats true. i was sitting here thinking about it, and i had this thought that the couple who live out in the country has been around my dog and knows how well the dog acts. everyone tells me that hes a very good looking dog and well trained with a great personality, when i thought about it, i think the couple just wants the dog because of those things. Not to give him a better home but just because they want him. i think they all are trying to guilt trip me so they can a better dog for free. hmmmm, well i think im going to talk to them and tell them what i think about what they were trying to do. that kinda makes me mad.

oh, and yes. I started training him the day i got him at 7 weeks old. i started with 15 min. a day then increased it to about 45 min. a day. i know thats a long session, but rotts are very smart and love to please. he loved the treats and the attention he got while we were training, and it kept him busy and not bored. i think my fav. trick of his is opening the kennel door so he can get in, and turning on the bathroom facet to get a drink.

lol
just wait until he opens the kennel door to get out

my weim did that and I got home for my lunch break and found her sleepig in my bed...
funny thing is, she used to have the smallest baldder while stuck in her huge kennel (which was right next to the bed... ) but now that she has full run of the house when we're at work, she can seem to hold it so much longer... hmmmm, curious!! [Roll Eyes]

they are little devils, but that's why we love them !!
