Oh my! I was barely in shock when I saw my 4month old male pug trying to hump on my 6month old male shih tzu! I kow this aint unusual but its quite wierd to raise puppies since they were 6weeks old then suddenly wake up one day seeing them hump at eachother! Like.....where did he even learn that?!?!?! I've never had any females here and we dont have any dog parks so he definitely has not seen any dogs in action Is this soemthing they learn naturally? Its hard to watch my babies getting to this stage....well not hard, just quite uneasy (but not in a bad way). Anyways, just want to know, how old do they really start to want it? When do they sexually mature? I plan to neuter my shih tzu but not my pug. When should I start introducing him to my moms female pug? Thanks!

"HUMPING" is not only a sign of sexual maturity but also dominance. My old girl when we first brought her home 9 years ago play humped my other female.
You may want to separate them before your female gets her first heat or else you may have more puppies than you bargined for.

PS I would wait until the dogs are at least 2 years of age to consider breeding them - even the male. At that age, any genetic disorders like hip displasia will become more evident which might make you change your mind about breeding them anyway.
Besides, it will give you a chance to show your dogs (win some ribbons) or awards to indicate they are valuable commodity - much to be desired.
Otherwise you may have litter after litter of pups no one wants.

sexual maturity is reached between the ages of 5 - 9 months depending on the dog. A male can have fertile sperm from this age, although the amount present will be quite low until he reaches full maturity at 18 -24 months. If you have not had your male that you want fixed, and he is the one doing the humping, then he has already learnt the behaviour and may not stop it even after castration, it is a good indication that it is time to get him fixed, before he lifts his leg, if it is your other male doing this, he will soon have the other one doing the same thing. Unfortunately it is the consequence of owning 2 dogs, that have neither been castrated or spayed. If you are planning on breeding get ready for this behaviour and a heck of a lot more stuff that may be unpleasant or uneasy to look at to us but quite natural for dogs. I have tried to AI my two dogs a long time ago, in my back yard, heaven knows what my neighbours would have thought if they had seen me over the fence!!! ![[Blushing]](graemlins/blush.gif)
