I have 5 dogs a yorkie mix, rat terrier, pomerainian mix, a baby from the yorkie/pom, and a pit bull. Many people tell me that i have too many dogs. I still want 2 more but maybe i shouldn't get more i take good care of them but maybe i am not being fair to them like they won't get enough attention if i have ore dogs what do you guys think how many dogs is just too many?

There is no such thing as too many friends. However, there is overcrowding and the financial obligations to keep your friends healthy and happy.
If you have the time, space and money, I don't think there is too many. Besides they keep each other company so they aren't all totally reliant on you for companionship. Only you know if you have enough time for all the grooming, cleaning up after, etc. [ May 10, 2004, 12:15 PM: Message edited by: doglover ]

you need a BIG house for that many dogs, a regular four-bed isnt going to cut it, and preferably a few acres for them to run around in. Dogs need space to escape from each other occasionally so if you cant provide that then dont get any more dogs. If you have a massive house and a field or two then thats great - get more pups. Also bear in mind that the more dogs you have the more complicated their "pack order" is - especially with males, and the more chance of fighting there is. Also more chance of marking inappropriately in the house etc. Plus the hygiene issues of that many dogs. I have five dogs myself - the three big dogs live in kennels because i wouldnt want more than two small dogs in my average-size two-bed flat. Lou

Yes I agree, I have 3 dogs and can't keep two of them together, the females, because they fight, it depends on the personalities of the dogs too, we have 10 acres, pens, and a fenced in yard for intermediate exercise, but I would not want anymore, it takes time, money, and a lot of energy, so if you have the facilities, money, and time, yes get more, but watch what you pick, the ones you have may get along, but when you introduce new ones you may get fighting, just be prepared to be able to separate them permanently if needed.

I don't think you can have too many!! Seriously though as long as you have the time and money to have a houseful then why not? I am luck in that I am home all day so I have lots of time to spend with my 4 but I know a lot of people who wouldn't dreamof having more than 1 dog because they are out a lot/work long hours. As for needing a large house I don't think thats necessary. All my dogs are large and I don't live in a mansion. They love being together and all sleep in 1 room. However if they do want to get away form each other there are more than 4 rooms in the house so i'm sure they will survive.

Is there a local by-law allowing a certain number of dogs? We pick up our new puppy on Saturday and they are trying to talk us into taking more than one...I'm not that brave :-) One is more than enough...now maybe if they were willing to take one of my kids...then maybe we could strike a deal! (kidding of course)

lol Lori, and don't let them talk you into taking more than one from the same litter, you can sometimes be lucky but more often than not siblings will fight all their lives, and it can be pretty nasty.
And Lindsi, just because these ones get along it doesn't necessarily mean your new additions, when you get them will. As I said be prepared to separate just incase.

That's good to know about the siblings fighting becuase the pups are so darn cute it was actually a little tempting...but just a little! My husband would have stopped me before I did anything crazy!
