Hello, I'm new to the forum...and forums in general. I'm going to become a proud mama of a black lab puppy on Saturday. I'm quite excited and just a little apprehensive. I owned a beautiful golden retriever for 10 years and had to put her down in December (still teary about it)and now I'm switching to a different breed that I've heard a few horror stories about.i.e. chewing, digging, home destruction. I'm also a little concerned about her age.She will be six weeks old on Satureday. The person we are getting her from is not a breeder but a pet owner with two labs and had an unexpected pregnancy, now he has eight little labs running around. He weaned them out of necessity as the mother wasn't doing well so they have been eating dry food for two weeks or more, but I'm a little concerned about having six week old puppy. Is it possible to house train at that age? What about crating? I've heard that you shouldn't crate them when they're that young. If anyone could let me know their experiences with labs and young pups I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new puppy! Yes I think you should start crate training right away and it is possible to train a puppy that young, but it won't be an 100%. Good Luck ~!

Hi there, and welcome, it wouldn't matter if your pup was the full recommended 8 weeks, you can't completely housetrain till they have full bladder control at around 12 weeks anyway, it is not a quick process, it takes time and patience. The breed, I have a black lab Ellie, who is just the best dog, she is inside, goes everwhere with me, in the car etc. she doesn't dig anymore, or chew, she grew out of it pretty quickly, at around 6 months old. so be prepared initially, but it doesn't go on forever. I'm sure your pup will be adorable and give much love to compensate for any troubles.
-------------------- I love my labs.

Thank you for the reassurance...I'm sure everything will be great. My husband and I did a walk about the yard last night to inspect the fence for any areas that the puppy could get under and look for dangerous areas. I forgot how similar a puppy was to having toddlers! I have a feeling I'm going to have a tougher time training my kids to stop leaving things on the floor that could harm the puppy, than I will actually training the puppy not to chew! :-)
