I recently tried to breed my female boxer with my male boxer. I had all of their testing done last year, and since I am now graduated from college decided it was the best time for me (as now I will have plenty of time to devote to Jada and her litter).

They ties around her 12th day, and he continually tried to mount her until they tied again on her 14th day, and has since stopped showing interest in her. She still appears to be in season, as her nipples and vaginal area are still swollen (the vaginal area is not nearly as large as it was though, and seems almost back to noraml). My question is, she would now be on her 26th day, and as te male stopped showing interest in her several days ago, is she still leaving her season, or why hasn't her enlarged areas returned to normal?

Please let me know.

This is probably a sure sign that she is pregnant, keep your fingers crossed, the hormones that race through them when in season don't abate when they become pregnant, hence the enlarged vulva, and slight showing of teats.

Thank you for the response. I know that I just needed to be patient for signs of pregnancy, but I want to be as prepared as possible. This is her first litter, so I want her to be as comfortable as she can, and have everything she needs for a successful birth.

Thanks Again.

I would take it as being a pregnancy and start right now, the first thing I do is to put my pregnant ***** -s on a puppy formula diet, this ensures they get the extra calcium for the pups, extra energy and general all round goodness, also recommended by my vets. Keep up her exercise, but don't over do it. before pregnancy she should have been of optium weight, if she is overweight she can have problems at birth. You don't need to increase her diet till she is at least 5 weeks in.
write back if you need any help. [Big Grin]

Thanks for the offer. I have been reading a lot of different books on raising litters, but unfortunately, these books contain many bad things as well. I know that most births go fine, but reading all of the possible negative things scare me. I just want Jada and her litter to be alright.

I found a useful calendar that takes you through some of the stages of pregnancy, by date, based on the date of first breeding. According to this calendar, her nipples may start to sag a little, and turn pink. According to this calendar, this should have started around the 16th, which ironically was exactly the date it started. This also helps me, because I was unsure about which date I should go by, the first breed or the last.

I do have another question for you. Did your lab experience morning sickness? Jada vomitted a little yesterday, and then a couple of times this morning. I called the vet, and she said I shouldn't worry. She recommended that I feed her several times a dat in smaller portions, and that might help. Any suggestions?

Oh, one more thing. My babies are strictly house dogs, so the male will be in the house with her when she delivers. None of the books really covered what to do if the male was present. I had intended on bay gating off the room until the puppies were older, and then letting him see them. Is it best to keep him away? How soon should I introduce him to his babies?

Thanks,
Shannon

Ok, well you take the date of whelping from the first day of mating not the last. count 63 days.
She will probably not show much till the last 2 weeks, by the last week she should have milk in them there teats.
When she has 3 weeks to go prepare a whelping box for her, and get her used to it. If you let her outside at this time she will most likely dig, (making nest) that is fine, except on the last day or so, watch out she doesn't dig a big hole under the house a decide to stay and have them there!!!
Now I'm not sure on your breed for whelping, but most of the big dogs don't seem to have too much trouble, I start to take their temperature in the last few days, look for a degree drop, then you know she is about to have them (12-24 hours),
normally. She may have a slight discharge, that is normal.
The vomiting can be quite normal, just watch she isn't bringing up everything, all the time, as your vet said, feed smaller, more often, and avoid anything from the table that has spice in it, right through to weaning, cause it will go into her milk and affect the pups too, after whelping.
Now your male, some are good, some get jealous, you will have to watch it, if you gate off that is a good idea, but watch for mum too, she may not like him round the pups and spend more time chasing him off than in the box, you can only tell when the time comes. I would never leave a male dog alone with the pups at any time though, you can let him see them from anytime, but do it supervised.
Tell me your dates so I am on the forum, if you have trouble or worries around whelping, write in and ask, you can pm me if you want.

Her whelping date should be July 5th. THis makes me nervous because people will be lighting off fireworks on the 4th. Should she go into labor that day, I am afraid she will already be stressed out from the fireworks. I am pretty sure no one on our street will be lighting any this year though.

Thank you so much for all your help. I REALLY appreciate it.
