I was eating at a local restaurant with family last night, when a friend of ours informed me of a sheperd mix girl who was locked up in a small dark pen behind our town's little police station. She had been there all day with no food or water. Before I could go over to the station (no cop there at the time), the dog was loose on the street again, obviously someone finally let her out. To make a long story a bit shorter, she came up to me on the street, so I brought her home (after trying to ask around for the owner) fearing she would be hit by a car, or God only knows what else. I gave her a bath, and contacted the police. Noone has claimed her. She had on an old collar, but no id. She had ticks ALL OVER her, and no apparent grooming care in a while. Is there a limit of time that the owner has to contact me? She doesn't look very well cared for, so I would have to seriously wonder if her "owner" wants her back. How do I find out if she is spayed? An ultrasound? THANKS!
p.s. sorry for the long post

For an owner like this (based on the condition of the dog) - FINDERS KEEPERS - LOSERS can p*** off.

Unless there is a chip in the dog the owner has no proof it's his and after 30 days unclaimed property usually belongs to the finder.

On a female there should be a scar if she's been neutered. About 1/2 to 1 inch long on the stomach - they are hard to see. Contact your vet for other ways they can tell.

I hope you keep her as it sound like she'd have a good home with your.

Thanks for replying. I really hope that she stays. I would rather not have to deal with the owner.
She's definintly trained, and good in the house...but I don't think that automatically reflects the owner as being responsible. I'm sitting here counting the ticks that I'm picking off of her. (Of course, she could have picked them up anywhere, but by the look of it, no preventitive has been used.) Thanks again......

Well said Doglover, Rottie, you have done the best you can to find the owner, give it up, take the dog as yours. If they do happen to knock on your door, tell them you are going to report them to your animal protection society, and to bugge- off.
In Aus. all dogs that have been sterilized have a tattoo in the ear, I don't know if it is the same in your country.
Keep us updated on your progress, good or bad.

Keep her! She will have a better home with you than with who ever had her first.
