OK, I'm not a dog owner. I don't dislike dogs, in fact I have lived with several from the time I was a kid until I was in my 30s and I loved them all dearly. But my wife is a cat lover -- we have three -- and there just isn't room for a dog right now.

That's really neither "here not there", though, my problem is with my next door neighbor's dog. We live in a rural area where most lots are at least an acre. A lot of our neighbors have dogs and we get along with most of them. Our house and our next door neighbor's house are both pretty near the common property line, so even though the lots are large the houses are pretty close.

A few months ago they bought a scottish terrier puppy (I heard it cost them $700...what a stupid #$%^&&^%$ waste of money that was... [Roll Eyes] ). This is the most obnoxious little **** of a "dog" that I have ever laid my eyes on. I can't go out of my front door or into my back yard without being greeted by a 120 decibel high pitched scream from this worthless piece of sh%%.

It doesn't even have to have a person to bark at. When the weather is nice, as it is here about 360 days a year, I like to sleep with my window open. I was woken up at 6:30 this morning (Sunday) when they let the dog outside. I think that it likes to bark at the trees or something.

OK. I think you are probably getting the point. One of the reasons that we used to love our neighborhood was the peace and quiet. Now I can't go out to get the paper in the morning or into my back yard to admire my native plant garden without being accosted by a 4 pound varmint sounding like it's about to bust a vein. These neighbors are inconsiderate enough to unleash this maven of Satan on their neighbors. How do I let them know in no uncertain terms that I would like nothing more than to see their little peice of **** die a slow painful death, without actually making such a thing happen? Is there anything that I can do to make the dog shut up?

TIA for any advice.

Frankly - NO. The only thing you can do is complain to the owner of Devil dog & the authorities.

It is up to the owner who can do at least 3 things to fix;

a) surgery to remove the voice box. Permanent solution - about $300 canadian. Recovery time about one week. Dog can still bark but has no volume. This is a solution for people who can't supervise their animals and don't know how to train.

b) anti bark collar (self explanatory0

c) lot of intense training.

Speak to your neighbors - advise them of your displeasure and ask them to do something about it. PS I hope your cats aren't like the ones that live here that sing to each other, to be let in etc. Remeber complaining is usually a two way street.

Normally issues can be resolved quite easily by speaking. How can they know of your displeasure if you haven't said anything.
I would calmly approach your neighbours, and TALK to them first, I would not advise them of their choices, that is up to them how they resolve it, if it continues then contact you local shire or council.
Also as stated you would want to make sure if your cats have free run that they haven't been next door pooping in their prized garden, could be the reason for the dog!!!! to get rid of the cats.
