Hi there

I am in the process of buying a Cavalier KC Spaniel Puppy (She's 3 weeks at present so another 5 to go)

Both myself and my girlfriend work during the week and will most probably have to leave the young lady at home for slightly longer than perhaps we would like.

I am now in a dilema, we have an option to buy her sister as well (from a reputable breeder) and I am thinking this.

Would having the two together be better for the times they will be left on their own. Also how much more effort is it to have 2 dogs.

If you could give me some advice here it'd be most appreciated.

Many thanks

CJ

Oh gosh no!! have you ever seen pups in a litter, they fight!! they try each other out for dominance, then the winner is top dog. Now I'm not saying that there is never a succesfull relationship with buying 2 from the same litter, but more often than not, they will fight. If you want a second pup, purchase from elsewhere.
2 dogs are double trouble, sometimes it's not as easy as it seems, and if you are not going to be at home, they can get into heaps and heaps of mischief, not to mention housetraining, you will have 2 on the go, No, I would stick with the one and give her as much love and attention as you can, when you can.

I love my labs.

2 puos is a nightmare if you are home all day never mind if you are out all day. I would steer well clear. As for fighting I have neverfound siblings to fight anymore than dogs from diferent litters.

I raised two lab pups together from separate litters and it was challenging but fun. I think that the hardest thing with littermates is getting the turn their focus on you. They don't go through separation from their siblings so they never feel a need to develop a strong, "you are my new leader" bond with you. No matter what anyone says, I loved having my two yellows at the same time. Moby and Greta were 4 weeks apart in age and definitely double trouble [Big Grin]

"Both myself and my girlfriend work during the week and will most probably have to leave the young lady at home for slightly longer than perhaps we would like."

Be specific. How long exactly? This is not up to you as to how long you would like, but it is based on what the puppy needs. Get "Good Owners, Great Dogs" by Brian Kilcommons and read at least that one book. Read more if you can, by Jan Fennel - the Practical Dog Listener, and the Brothers of New Skete - The Art Of Raising A Puppy.

Don't just go get a dog and not know the dangers, rewards, and how to manage the situation. It can be the difference between pure joy and tragedy if you take the time to discover 'real world' what you are getting into.

Best Wishes,

Ken
