I just got a dog from the pet store. It was a give away. The kids just fell in love with it and didn't want any other. The guy at the store said he had only had it for three days. He said it is a Golden Retriever, and that it is a puppy. I am not sure that it is a Golden Retriever. It has a purple tongue, and it is a light cream color. It has short hair, all over. I am wondering what kind of breed this sounds like? It is very, very timid. that is the only word I can think of. It like to stay under things (couch, chair) It doesn't like to come out of the living room. It runs to hide if there is noise. If you carry it out of the living room and place it in another room, then it will stay there until you move it. For example, my son took it to his room, and put it on his bed. the dog stayed there all night even thought the door was open, and there was activity in the rest of the house. Our other dogs would have never done that. It will only eat if you don't come near it. It does seem to be house trained, but it doesn't want to go very often. It doesn't have all of it's teeth, so I guess that is why they think it is a pup. I guess I just want to know what type of dog it might be, and why it seems to act so strange? I am thinking it may have had someone be mean to it, but how do I help it know that it can relax? Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me.

Getting a dog from the pet store is not recommended, however, since you have been so kind as to 'rescue' this dog, and it sounds like you will give it a good home. 1.) Take her/him into the vet right a way to get proper care underway. 2.) The poor little guy has probably been sadly abused/neglected - get the book "Good Owners, Great Dogs" and read it from cover to cover, paying special attention to the great section of working with dogs who have unknown problem backgrounds. 3.) Give the puppy lots of good family life following the guidelines in the book. You should wind up with a wonderful dog your family will love and enjoy for years to come.

I agree with Ken that you need to take the pup to a vet first thing. It will be stressful for the dog but it is a necessity.

Take heart - my mother adopted a dog from a local shelter (her name was daisy) and she spent the first week in a basket - shivering. With time and love, this was one of the best dogs I've ever seen.

Once the vet exam is done - pretty much leave the dog alone for the most part. Keep the kids away so he can adjust to his new environment or have one only look after him. Spend some quiet time with the dog, petting - talking - small trips to backyard, etc. Don't try to teach him anything more than the fact he is safe. If you try to force him to adjust, he will just become more withdrawn. I would make a place just for him - a quiet location where he can eat, sleep, rest unmolested by other dogs or kids or household comings&goings. A small bathroom or laundryroom would be great.

Ken also suggest reading a dog owners book - I agree it's a good idea. If you read certain passaged out loud to the dog and your kids it might help as well.

As for a purple tongue - I don't think Golden Retrievers are know for dark tongues but chows and chowx may have a dark tongue (oriental breeds) your vet can confirm this for you.

Do you know how to post a pic on the forum, that would help greatly to identify the breed and approx. age.
If he is losing his teeth, the front incisors are normally the first to be replaced at around
4 months of age, approx. only, as diet etc. can affect this.
The rest, as Doglover has stated. Quite often, other dogs and kids, although maybe well meaning, can frighten the pup, he needs to be able to get used to your family in a very quiet, placid way, soon he will be up and about, running round the house getting his bearings on who's boss. [Big Grin] . Good luck, good on you for rescueing him, and enjoy!!!

Thank you for all of the advice. I made the Vet appointment, and ordered the book. The dog is doing alot better. He actually has picked his favorite child, and has started to follow him around. I set up a place for him to sleep, but he prefers to be with Levi. My children are really calm (thank goodness) and our other dogs are outside pets, so they don't excite him too much. Malichai still gets very upset about the vaccum, so we have scheduled his evening walk during chore time. As soon as I figure it out I will post a picture of him. Thanks again for all of your help.

Katie, you are making us all very happy. It is a joy to hear someone as responsive as you has taken on a little 'needy' dog to love.

Keep us up on how he is doing.

Best,

Ken

Hi Daisy, glad he is settling in, soon he will be a well adjusted member of your family, so glad to hear of someone taking on an unwanted dog. The vacumm, well my Ellie who I have had since a pup hates it too, I don't know why, i have never done anything with it to her, we call it the Green monster, cause its green, she goes and hides under the bed only time she will walk past it is when it is in its little nook.
Go figure, who knows.
