Ariel (5.5 months old) was attacked today by an american stafford (male). To me it really looked like he was trying to hurt her and she was yelping pretty good. I had to ask the stupid owners three times to hold their dog so we could get by. I check her and it doesn't appear to be any injury. This will affect her - she was otherwise a completely neutral dog. Now what?

Is she in obedience if not introduce her asap to a SAFE no off leash obedience talk to the instructor and explain what happened as to avoid a trauma induced dog aggression.

Thanks for your reply - we are in classes already and she has never once shown any aggression. I've already filed a complaint with the authorities in Edmonton and these are restricted dogs to be on a leash or muzzled at all times.

Some people don't deserve dogs.

I agree doglover. Some people don't deserve and shouldn't have dogs.
This happened to Blaze last week while I was walking him. The other dog came tearing out of its own yard and started attacking Blaze. The owner of the dog was just calling out "come come come" repeatedly. Then when her dog eventually gave up and went back to her she started hitting it.
I hope Ariel is ok and not too shaken. Or you either.

Thanks guys.. I took Ariel for her walk this morning right by where the attack occured (this is our normal area). She did not appear apprehensive or edgy. Later today we'll go to the River and off the leash dog park where she had lots of fun. I'll watch her to see if there is any change on how she greets the other dogs and go from there.

For the life of me I can't understand how someone could own two pitbulls and not invest in proper training.

Well, we lucked out yet again. We took her to one of the busiest dog parks and she is fine. After a few minutes where she was cautious meeting new dogs, she is back to her old self. I guess the 100+1 good experiences are enough to balance out the bad one.

She was running up - playing and even took a couple rebuffs with n0 sign of aggression.

I'm happy for you and your dog. I'm glad that everything is fine.

My dogs and I were attacked by a pitbull once. My dogs were on leash and this pitbull comes running over to us.
My dogs barked and held thier own but it was difficult since they were on a leash. I yelled at the dog but it didn't make a difference. Finally I found a brick, picked it up and raised the brick and yelled. The dog ran home.

I got the address of the dog, but since the dog did not bite me or my dogs, there was little I could do.

I'm generally afraid of any dog off leash. I know that I was a dog catcher in a past life. I've been bitten by a dog 4 times in this life.

Hi Doglover, sorry to hear about poor Ariel, I have been away, or I would have posted sooner.
Hope she is fine now, and also yourself, you must have received quite a fright too.

I love my labs.

Well, we just got back from obdience. She's still a little jumpy around the big male mastif but did not show any aggression which is what I was most worried about.

PS by officer for the enforcement of the regulations was here today. He's going to give these owners the welcome to the neighborhood speech as well as check out the pitbulls.

I'm also pretty afriad of dogs offleash, mostly because my old pit/lab is dog aggressive, and all these off leash dogs just run up to her, and I keep pulling her away, and these dogs don't even go back to their owners. I keep my dog under great control when we go on walks, and she'll even be finewith thepasserbys...but when a dog just goes running up to her off leash...well...what can I do? I don't think my dog can get in trouble for attacking an off leash dog, though...it's illegal to have a dog offleash whose not voice/sight trained, and that only on certain trails.

I'm glad your dog isn't traumatized! I'd be worried sick if any dog attacked mine! Good luck!

You might want to try a muzzle for her so you can let her off the leash. It's amazing how their behaviour is actually better off the leash. she can then bark or back off. The book I'm reading now says that we - by the way we hold the dogs posture - make their aggression worse.

my dog got attacked by a rottweiler and afterwards seemed uninjured but then we noticed he was a little quite and scared and discovered that he had a deep cut. It needed like 5 stiches the bloody dog that did it was the nextdoor neighbour's and i had to practicly beat it off with a pole for it to let go of my poor little dog
