Hi my name is spencer and we have one 8 year old shelty. Okay I'm 13 and have always wanted my own dog. My mom thinks that our sheltie would never accept another dog but, I think if we do it correctly our current dog might accept one. What can i do to convince my mother that it is possible. Also what kind of dog should i get. I love pugs, cavaleir king charles spaniels, shitzus, labs ( they might be too big) If you have any suggestions on what kind of dog or what i should do PLEASE post.
Thanks

You need to ask yourself the following questions:

a) your existing dog - how do they react to other dogs during your walks. Are they friendly, guarded, indifferent? If they are friendly then it is likely you can introduce a dog into your home with no problems

b) if this is your dog - are you going to accept full responsiblity? That includes walks, expenses, etc. Or is this another dog your parents will be responsbile for?

c) What happens in 5 years when you're 18 and have a girlfriend? Will you still take your dog for walks everyday - pick up poop. Or is this dog going to be like an old video game.

d) Why do you need a second dog? Is your 8 year old being taken for daily walks, played with, groomed and still not taking up enough of your time?

I don't think it's a matter of whether your 8 year old will accept a new dog but whether you need another dog at this point. It is much better for a 13 year old to play with his parents dog until they are a little older (say 20 ish) and then get a dog of their own with full responsiblity.

My experience as a 21 year old still rough get the practice with your parents dog first and narrow your choice so when you do get your own place your own dog you dont have any second thoughts to the breed.
Dont pick it because there was one in the paper [Mad] bad choice [Wink]
