Hi - Can anyone tell me if Border Collies like to swim? I don't know any that do, and Ralph, my BC will not swim at all. He loves paddling, but he will not go into the water where his feet won't touch the ground - even to fetch a stick (Ralph would run over hot coals to fetch a stick)

Is Ralph destined never to swim for fun??

How old is Ralph?
He may get gamer by himself. Some border collies love to swim. Some don't. If he likes the water though, he may eventually get further out. Do it gradually. Start off with him getting the stick in shallow water and gradually keep throwing it out further each time.
Your lucky he gets as far as he does. I know dogs that hate water altogether. I thought Blaze would be a water hater as he would even walk around puddles. Now he's splashing through them on purpose.

He's 5 - he has recently started putting his face under water to fetch sinking objects - so that's a major improvement for him. He has started going further in for the sticks - I guess it will take time.

Ralph - 5 months or 5 years? My rotti cross loves to swim - my late shepard hated water. The hater almost drown as a pup and never got over it. She would swim when she had to but never enjoyed it.

My current pup loves the water but won't go in over where she can stand. I think it's a confidence thing.

Hi there, we have a 9yo Border Collie called Bryn, we live near the sea and Bryn loves to go out as far as I can throw a stick, but we also have a Bernese and all he does is stand at the waters edge barking non stop and mugging Bryn when he gets back to shore so we have both sides of the coin. Bryn didn't always like swimming but like Ralph he will do anything for a stick, we encouraged him by throwing the stick just a little way out so that he could paddle to it and then when he had a bit more confidence throwing it just a little bit further each time we went down to the beach, now there's no stopping him and it's great in the summer when the boys are really hot, just need to have Bailey lose his voice
