Alright heres my dog attack story. Today I brought Whiskey to the vet to have his stitches out when leaving not even out of site of the office this dog came flying out of nowhere showing aggressive posture to Whiskey my 6 mth old German shepard/collie/blue heeler. Whiskey is very dominant so I knew I was in trouble and immediatley assured no eye contact placing my hand in front of his eyes when possible well this went on for a couple of minutes as I was trying to figure the easiest way out with my pup. I luckily spotted a lady in an SUV who as I approached calmly with the offending dog trying to get my pups tail who i was stearing away let me toss him in the back and drove us a safe distance away. THANK GOD FOR NICE PEOPLE! Now should this woman have not been here what else can I do I have heard of tasers that will knock a dog out but not kill them, mase, pepper spray. This is a large dog and I know I would have been useless going physical with a large dog I dont know. This happened when I was younger and had a wired hair terrier that was dog aggressive and i was 8 so I just let her off leash and Yelled for help all worked out the attacking dog was very afraid when she was no longer in flight mode and am sure this would be the case with Whiskey bu not at 6 mths I wont ahve him traumatized and untrusting of dogs.
I am in Canada does anybody know my option of devices or sprays to carry?

Sam that would have been the last thing you would have needed at the moment for poor Whisky.
I don't know any of your laws or sprays you can use over there sorry, hope Whisky didn't get a scare.

Yeah so not fair in the US you can have tasers, mase, pepper spray here we are not legally allowed to carry any otf these unles law enforcement. But I found bear spray a mild forceful shot of pepper spray so I am going to pick some up as soon as I can find a store.

I think Whiskey definitley did get a scare but he knew I was standing my ground just as I do when he is or was dominant. I think he knows I would gladly put myelf in the position of being hurt before him he is a baby and I care for him not the other way around, not to mention what it would do to all the work I have done establishing alpha with him if I were to allow him to be attacked or defend himself or my self.

I just dont understand how people can let such a thing happen, if you have a large dog it needs to be contained properly, I mean nno collar, no leash, no owner thats ridiculous.

Sorry had to vent [Mad]

I'm pretty sure that you can't taser the dog but pepper or bear spray aren't illegal. THe owner might try to sue you if you permanently damage the dog but the leash rules apply (off is out of control). IE you can use severe force to defend yourself (human) against an off the leash dog.

My husband is a recycle collector for the city here and there have been incidents where a driver has killed an aggressive dog (with crow bar) that was off the leash. There were no consequences to driver - owner had no recourse.

I have been harassed by larger dogs with my older girl on numerous occasions. One thing that slowed them down is when I stepped in front & shouted STOP BAD DOG at them meeting their eyes. They might be dog aggressive but most still know that humans are a whole other story.

Are you & whisky OK?

Yes we are fine THANKYOU, I was shaken up more so then him I think.
I did actually look up owner liability here and it did say may do WHATEVER necessary including death if attacked by a loose dog with no owner or if the owner does nothing.
Well I think I may call the humane society and see what they reccomend I can use bear spray and some have said an ir horn is useful as well.

The air horn might frighten your dog more as he will be closer to you. A vinegar/water mixture is recommended for training - add some cayanne pepper in it in a stream bottle and you have your own version of pepper spray that will definately sting the eyes. The offensive dog still has to be close enough for you to use it without spraying Whiskey.

Now that is what I wqs thinking about the horn and unless hes in a scuffle I dont see a reson to frighten him. The bear spray is a quick shot ten 1 second apart so I know I am definitley picking some up what do they reccomend for your husband to carry?

They don't. The dog(s) that have attacked where killed by single blows with shovels. I'm planning on getting a small bear spray to carry with me to the off the leash areas

Funny you mention that I read an article when i did a search as what to do and it said just that carry a metal pipe and hit between the ears unfortunatley I also live close to a police staion and dont think that would go over well plus I have REALLY bad aim lol. I think I will stick with the bear spray cant throw or hit for the life of me but spray a can I can do that.
