We were celebrating Canada Day (July 1st for you non-Canadians out there) and they were setting off fireworks in the park behind my house. My dog, a 5 month old wheaten terrier was in the park at the time. Through most of the show he was okay but near the end there was an extremely loud one and he went nuts. He started running and I could barely hold onto him, I had no idea he was so strong. When I finally was able to pick him up I just about lost my dinner because there was a horrible smell coming from him. I have no idea what it was but I had to give him a bath after because it was so bad, I don't think it was um...number 2 but it was really bad. Does anyone know what this horrible smell could have been?

Yes, when dogs suffer stress, a gland over produces and you get a horrible smell. . I hope I explained that right lol [ July 01, 2004, 09:43 PM: Message edited by: BreeZy/sheltiepups ]

Oh boy! I know that nasty smell. It's his **** glands. Some dogs release them when stressed, some release them when relaxed (my Chester has been known to do it in his sleep). These glands make a fluid that's usually released when the dog poops (it can give the poop a glossy sheen) but our dog had diarrhea for his first few months with us, which isn't conducive to pushing against the gland, so it doesn't release. He would then release when the gland was "full" and he was relaxed. Once he was on my lap (you never saw someone do laundry so quickly). If it happens again, you can wipe his butt to get the liquid off him and get rid of the smell quicker.

i think this just happened to my puppy. my neighbor is building a roof on his shed, nearby where the puppy stays. And there was a yellowish puddle with foul odor and a litlle bit of it on his behind. Is this the same thing, that he was stressed or scared?
